ing site has also helped lower
costs, said building committee co-
chairmen, Nathan Goldin and
Samuel Hechtman. The new Adas
Shalom, they said, will cost no
more in 1946 dollars than the
present building at Curtis near
Livernois, erected in 1946. Yet,
with 80,000 square feet, it will
have nearly a third more space
and the site is 20 times as large.

The new Adas Shalom will blend
indoor and outdoor spaces, the
architect, Harry King of King and
Lewis, stated.
The setting is a rolling, wooded
25-acre site.
Entrance through the sanctuary
will be reached through a tree-lined
plaza.
Other major areas will open on
a series of terraces. One of these
will be a Sukka Terrace, on which
the congregation will erect its
Sukka.
Window walls will look out on a
view of pond, winding stream and
wooded hill.
The beauty of the site has been
adopted as the principal decorative
element of the new synagogue,
King said.
The structure will have two
levels without a basement and
without costly excavation. The
lower stage, housing the library
and religious school classrooms,
will be at ground level.
The upper stage, placed higher
up the hill, will be only a few steps
up from the ground. There will
also be a ramp entrance for the
convenience of those requiring it.
The new Adas Shalom will ac-
commodate up to 3,500 members.
The main sanctuary will provide
permanent seating for 1,000 for
normal Sabbath services. It will
be enlarged to 1,400 for the High
Holy Days and other special activi-
ties.
The social hall seating 1,600 will
share a common lobby and other
facilities with the main sanctuary.
When used for the High Holy Days,
it will be identical in decor of Ark
and Bima with the main sanctuary.
