happened. At about one o'clock in
the morning we caught a bandit
who had entered the kibutz through
our barbed wire fence. He was a
young Arab, about my own age. He
wore rubber-soled shoes and held a
machine-gun.
The Arab gave himself up by
walking towards our watchmen
with his hands over his head, as a
sign of surrender. We took his
weapons and locked him up in the
guard room, the one with the
barred window. When I started to
leave the room, he called out,
"Havajah!" (Mister!)
I turned back towards him, and
to my amazement he began to
speak in perfect Hebrew: "Hava-
jah! There is something very im-
portant I must tell you."
The whole thing seemed very
strange to me. I looked at him and
replied, "Fine—go ahead."
"Later tonight bandits from Jor-
dan plan to steal your herd," he
said.
"Who are you? Why are you tell-
ing me all this?" I asked in sur-
prise.
"I am one of the gang and I
have come to warn you."
"Oh! Now I understand. You
want money," I said. He seemed
offended.
"I don't want a thing from you,"
he said roughly.

"In that case, what is it you're
after?" I asked, feeling that I was
beginning to lose my temper.
"Havajah! Once, when I was a
child, the members of this kibutz
saved my life. I feel that I must
