The recitation of the "Shema"
constitutes the affirmation of the
faith on the part of the individual
Jew. The unity, the indivisibility
and the exclusiveness of the Al-
mighty is part of the parcel of the
Hebrew faith. Some explain that
when Moses received the word
from God which stated that He is
the God of Israel, there was doubt
in his mind as to whether the Is-

raelites understood from this that
He was the one and only God.
Therefore, it is said that Moses
instructed them to this effect by
saying "Hear 0 Israel, the Lord
Our God, the Lord is One." The
rabbis in the Midrash actually
state that when the Israelites heard
the word of God coming from Sinai
telling them that He was the God
who took them out of the land of
Egypt, they responded by saying
"Our God is the One and Only
God." On hearing this response
they were instructed to reaffirm
this basic principle of faith every
morning and evening, as is our
tradition today.
The Bible in the Book of Deu-
teronomy instructs the people to
love God and to do His bidding
"When thou liest down and when
thou risest up." The rabbis inter-
preted the phrase "when thou liest
down" to refer to the proclamation
of the faith in the evening
"Shema." They interpreted the
phrase "when thou risest up" to
refer to the proclamation of the
faith in the morning "Shema." In-
deed, these two periods represent
two different moods in the life ci
man. Both of these moods require
that man remember His creator as
the one and only omnipotent God.
When rising in the morning, man
feels ambitious and all powerful,
thinking that he can accomplish
everything without any help what-
soever, almost as if he didn't need
God. At this time he is asked to
reaffirm his faith in God who is
the only all powerful being, all
other beings depending upon Him.
In the evening man is tired, ex-
hausted and almost frustrated,
sometimes thinking that no one
else can help him and that there
is no hope or reliance. At this time,
he is asked to reaffirm his faith in
God which brings about the under-
standing that while he is tired, God
is always active and powerful as
well as helpful. At this time, the
faith changes from one of acquies-
cense to one of trust and reliance
upon God. Thus, the requirement
to reaffirm the faith both in the
morning and in the evening was
ordained.

Appointment of JAMES E.
JOHNSON as Michigan Employ-
ment Security Commission Service
