Dear Mom and Dad,
We've talked about working within the system
for change—today I met a man who is showing me
it can be done.
He's Howard Wittenberg, an attorney who
came to speak to our class. Mr. Wittenberg didn't
agree with some of our arguments. but what im-
presed all of us about him was that he cares. He
cares about what's happening to the air and water,
and he warned that if mankind cannot unite for
once in a common fight for survival—there will be
no mankind.
He says, without the usual .hesitation, that
Viet Nam was a mistake. He says our plans for
Asia seem to have replaced our plans for our own
country—our plans for war against poverty, illiter-
acy, and illness.
But most of all, we had the feeling he wasn't
dismissing us as romantics, adolescents, or worse.
He said our criticism was the life breath of a vital
democracy_
So I'm passing out literature for Mr. Witten-
berg, who is running for State Representative. He
spends all his time, when he's not practicing law,
going door to door meeting the people of the 69th
district. Already he's visited over 5.000 homes and
hopes, before the primary on August 4th, to meet
every family. That's the kind- of concern I meant,
and that's why I'm working for him—within the
system.
. Love,

/1/ir lwtX

P.S. Have you met Howard Wittenberg yet, what
do you think of him?
