WASHINGTON (JTA)—Israeli technical assistance to Latin
America will be stepped up under the new two-year pact signed
here over the weekend by Ambassador Itzhak Rabin and repre-
sentatives of the Organization of American States, it was reported
In 1969, 89.2 per cent of the
Jewish population lived in brban
settlements. The size of Israel's
rural population remained almost
unchanged as compared with
1968. Of the total Jewish popula-
tion, the moshavim constituted
4.9 per cent, and that of the
kibutzim 3.4 per cent. At the end
of the year, 57 per cent of the
non-Jewish population lived in
rural areas,
The most marked growth in
population during 1969 took place
in the southern region, whose
population showed an increase of
4.6 per cent. This growth was a
continuation of the trend which set
in actually since the establishment
of the state and which exceeded
the general growth in the country's
population throughout the period
of the state.
The population of the southern
region, which in 1948 accounted
for 2.5 per cent of the total popula-
tion of the country, rose to 8 per
cent in 1961 and to 11 per cent at
the end of 1969.
