Orthodox Union Hits 'Indiscriminate'
Abortions as Danger to Morality
NEW YORK—The head of Ortho-
dov Jewry's congregational body
termed "indiscriminate abortions
a terrible danger to the moral un-
derpinnings of our society."
Rabbi Joseph Karasick, president
of the Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of Ameria, made
this statement in a call directed to
the medical profession and to the
young women affected by the re-
cent New York State legislation
which makes abortions possible
upon the decision of the prospec-
tive mother and her doctor.
Rabbi Karasick stated: "Jewish
tradition points out that there are
three partners in the newly born,
namely father and mother and the
Almighty 'Himself. Birth in itself
is cloaked in the sanctity of the
Divine and the Bible considers the
human being the crown of creation.
To destroy a human embryo is
sacriligious interference with life
itself and akin to murder. Only
when there is actual and acute dan-
ger to the life of the mother, does
Jewish religious law eprmit termi-
nation of pregnancy."
The Jewish leader pointed out

that the Rabbinical Council of
America, at its recent conven-
tion, unanimously passed a reso-
lution admonishing doctors and
prospective mothers to be aware
of the moral gravity of a deci-
sion to destroy embryonic life.
"No Jewish authority of standing
has even pronounced any other
opinion in this matter," Rabbi
Karasick stressed, "for the Bible
itself, the Talmud, and our re-
ligious codes are quite explicit
in rejecting wanton interference
with pregnancy and birth."

QUESTED THAT THE WARD NUMBER AND ITEM NUMBER BE KNOWN.
The Jewish leader stressed that
"The increasing permissiveness in
this area is but another indication
of a deep-seated moral decay which
seems to gnaw on the vitals of our
society. We seem to live for grati-
fication and not for responsibility,
for self-serving satisfaction and not
for varieties and values. The very
fiber of our society is fatally weak-
ened by lending the cloak of legali-
ty to such hedonistic tendencies."
