VAR Missiles Replaced as Fast as Israel Downs Them TEL AVIV (JTA)—All the Egyp- tian anti-aircraft missiles and mis- sile sites Israel has destroyed in 61 consecutive days of attacks have been replaced, an Israeli staff officer reported Tuesday. ''The missile situation is un- changed," he said. "By that I mean the deployment, the number of sites and the limits from the canal are unchanged. They are having no problems replacing mis- siles." On the brighter side, he noted that the Israeli strikes had pre- ,. ented the construction of addi- tional missile sites, although It- zhak Rabin, . ambassador to the United States and former chief of staff, said recently that the Soviet- made' Egyptian missiles were as close as two or three miles from the Suez Canal. The government has said they are no clpser than 15 miles from the canal. Israel has put the number of Egyptian missile bases at about a dozen SAM-2s and three SAM-3s. (In Moscow, the Communist Party newspaper Pravda insist- ed that there are no Soviet per- sonnel operating missiles in Egypt, contending that "the real reason" for such reports is "the fear of Israeli generals about the growth of Israeli losses." (Should those losses continue, Pravda said, "the military superi- ority of the Israelis over the Arabs will continue to melt." (Pravda also claimed that Egyp- tian gunners have shot down seven American-made Israeli Phantom jets "in recent days." Israel has put the total at four in the past month. (In Cairo, an Egyptian military- spokesman claimed an Israeli Skyhawk was downed Monday dur- ing an Israeli raid on the southern sector of the canal. Israel denied the claim. The Cairo spokesman also alleged that the Phantom downed on Saturday, which he said had switched tactics and was flying low, had been "intercepted from the very first moment." (If true, the claim suggests that the Phantom was shot by an ad- vanced SAM-3 surface-to-air mis- sile, which specializes in hitting low-level aircraft. Israel has no confirmation of Egyptian use of a Soviet-made personal anti-aircraft missile. (Israel asked the International Red Cross to help return the body of Shmuel Hetz, the pilot who was apparently killed when his plane was shot down over Egypt Saturday. A Cairo com- munique quoted the plane's other pilot, Maj. Menahem Eini, who was captured, as saying that Capt. Metz had been killed in the plane as it exploded, and had not bailed out, as earlier believed. (In reporting this latest air expansionism and bears the full roll over the weekend. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned that a four-man inter- national cooperation project in Cambodia is staying to continue organ- izing Cambodian farmers and helping them use modern farming meth- ids in the Mekong River area. "The men tiave instructions not to pull out as long as they can possibly fulfill their mission: to fight hunger," an Israeli Embassy spokesman said. The Israelis have been in Cambodia for almost four years, organiz- ing farmers cooperatives for marketing, consuming and using water and running experimental farms where new strains of old crops— such as rice—and new crops are grown and demonstrated. They were invited into the area by the Mekong River Committee, an outgrowth of the United Nations' Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East. The Israeli ambassador in Nam Phon has the final word on when these farmers in their experimental farm 15 miles north of Pam Phen are to be evacuated. Their families left last month when fighting broke out near the' capital. According to an Israeli spokesman, the Cambodian farmers working with the Israelis have made plans to defend their farms if the Com- munists get close. 10--Friday, July 24, 1970 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS VOTE FOR A FIGHTING LEGISLATOR Pd. for by Citizens for Cooper
