Messenger of Good Tidings

Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek
was cool before-SW/id Frost's fire
recently when he appeared on the
New Yorker's interview show.
"Would you expect a Jew living
in New York to be American first
and Jewish second, or Jewish first
and American second?" Kollek was
asked. "It depends about which
country has more to worry and
that's doubtful at the moment,"
Kollek answered. Frost responded
lamely, "That's a great answer."

As to the possibility of an Arab
ever becoming mayor of Jerusa-
lem, Kollek replied with a story.
At a youth summer encampment in
which Israelii and Arabs took part,
"They did two things which at the
moment is very unlikely to happen
in Jerusalem," said Kollek. "They
elected a girl as mayor and an
Arab as vice mayor."

From the Saturday Review, with-
out comment:

Mrs. Portnoy's
Friend's Complaint

Five thousand miles, forever gone,
My F011 lives life one way or
other-
! cannot show my crippled heart.

I'm not a Jewish mother.
I shun the tear, hand out the smile.
Conceal the creeping sludge that
Pours between the layered grief
Like grease, not chicken fat.
I'd like to carry on a bit.
Yell loud for Sister, scream for
Brother,
Have the family cry in concert—
Hell! Wish I were a Jewish
mother.
