Guerrilla Outpost Under Attack; Israel
Strikes Back for Terrorizing Its Villages
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Israeli forces
repulsed an Egyptian commando
raid across the Suez Canal Monday
night, killing one Egyptian soldier.
There were no Israeli casualties.
A military spokesman said the
raid was on a small scale. The
large quantity of mines and ex-
plosives found after the Egyptians
retreated under Israeli artillery
fire indicated that the Egyptians'
purpose was to plant mines and
carry out acts of sabotage, he
said. The encounter took place
near Kantara in the southern sec-
tion of the canal zone.
Israeli jets pounded Egyptian
targets in the canal zone Monday
afternoon and returned safely to
their bases. Heavy artillery ex-
changes were reported Monday
night between Israeli and Egyptian
forces.
There were no Israeli casualties.
An Israeli spokesman said there
is no truth to an Egyptian claim
that its forces successfully carried
out a large-scale commando raid
on Israeli positions on the canal's
east bank Sunday night and in-
flicted he a v y casualties. The
spokesman said no Israeli positions
came under attack.
A military spokesman said that
Soviet-Egyptian missile sites
have not moved any closer to
the Suez Canal since last week
when Israel Chief of Staff
Gen. Haim Bar-Lev, disclosed the
presence of SAM-2s and SAM-3s
in a 17-mile-deep belt beginning
15 miles west of the waterway.
The spokesman said the Egyp-
tians and Russians have changed
their tactips. Last week they fired
about 1011 missiles "blindly" at
Israel aircraft in the hope that
one might hit. Now they are fir-
ing fewer missiles at a time, he
said.
Three residents of Gaza were in-
jured Tuesday when a grenade
thrown at an Israeli car missed
and exploded in a market place
in the Djebalia quarter.
Israel Air Force jets attacked
targets in Egypt and Jordan Wed-
nesday and returned safely to
their bases. The attack over Jor-
danian territory lasted almost an
hour and concentrated on guerrilla
bases and Jordan army positions.
A military spokesman said Jor-
danian regulars were aiding guer-
rillas who shelled Yardena and
Beth Yosef settlements in the
Beisan Valley Tuesday night.
Metulla, Israel's northernmost
settlement, came under mortar at-
tack from Lebanese territory Tues-
day night and- Wednesday morn-
ing. Some cultivated farmlands
were set on fire, but there was no
further damage reported in either
attack and no casualties.

Port Tewfik, Port Suez, Callah
and Qantara. According to Cairo,
the planes were engaged by

Jordan reported Wednesday that
Israeli aircraft strafed a village
near the Syrian border, wounding
13 farmers. An Israeli military
spokesman said Jordanian army
regulars have been aiding guerril-
las in stepped-up attacks on Israeli
border settlements. He said the
cooperation was the result of an
accord signed last week between
King Hussein's government and
the Palestinian guerrillas.
