Hebrew-U Discovery Licks Virus (Continued from Page 1) ness to receive instruction by the university scientists on bow to implement the new method. Newcale Disease, Prof. Perek explains, is an epidemic disease which was first determined in 1926 by British scientists in Newcastle on a flock of birds imported from India. The infection, caused by a virus, affects the respiratory tract and the nervous system of the birds. The disease appears with varying strains, from mild to severe strength, the latter killing up to 100 per cent of infected flocks. For some time it had been known from laboratory experi- ments that UV radiation kills NDV in a matter of only 30 sec- onds, but no applied research on poultry had been made until the Hebrew University scientists start- ed their research project. They were prompted also by the fact that after the Six-Day War, a se- vere strain of the disease appeared in Israel, possibly coming from neighboring countries, and that the disease was spreading in vac- cinated as well as non-vaccinated flocks, especially affecting young chickens from 10 days of age until 10 weeks. During the first days of their life, baby chickens may withstand a slight infection of Newcastle Disease Virus by means of a cer- tain amount of antibodies which they receive from their immunized mother through the egg yolk, but they gradually lose these inherited antibodies. Until the age of 21-26 days, chickens are not able to pro- duce sufficient antibodies in their tissues by vaccination in order to counter a massive infection. In addition, it appeared that the im- nmnological response of young chickens with inherited anti- bodies might be interfered with by early vaccination. The chick- ens may normally be exposed to massive infection from the out- side with the NDV being carried through the air as far as 4 kilo- meters from infected to non-in- fected flocks. Since UV radiation is widely used in bacteriological labora- tories and in food packing stations in order to avoid contamination of the air by bacteria, fungi and virus, Prof. Perek and Dr. Heller decided to try continuous radia- tion of chickens in their houses by using UV lamps of 2530 Ang- strom wavelength. Prior to the actual NDV experi- ments, however, they wanted to establish whether the birds might be affected by continuous radia- tion itself, i.e. whether it affects their growth, health or feed effi- ciency. In three of those advanced Youth Searches Perspective experiments an increase in weight gains was note d, compared to the weight of chickens in non- UV-exposed flocks. In a fourth ex- periment, no differences in weight gains could be observed, but the feed efficiency of the UV-radiated group was 7 per cent higher than in the non-exposed group. In all four experiments, the feed effi- ciency was significantly better, by 5-7 per cent, than in all groups which had not been exposed to UV radiation. Moreover, it was found that the eyes of the chick- ens in the LTV-exposed groups were not seriously affected by radiation, and that the birds kept on eating and drinking normally. The bacteria in the air were counted by cubic meters, and a highly significant difference was found. In the ITV-radiated rooms were 100-1,000 times less bacteria isolated from the air than in non- treated rooms. As a followup to the research, the scientists have recently per- formed several successive experi- ments by using UV radiation in chicken houses. In the experimen- tal rooms, UV radiation was per- formed continuously on the chick- ens, from day-old chicks to 60 days of age, while in the adjacent control rooms, no radiation was installed. In each of the rooms, a cage containing NDV-infected birds was placed high on the wall. The birds in the cage sneezed and coughed, spreading the drops from their beaks all over the room. When they died, they were re- placed by new infected birds in the same cages. The experiment lasted 22-26 days until the control groups died by NDV infection. No birds in the radiated groups showed signs of the disease and none of them died. A total of 700 birds were used in all these experiments. The research, Prof. Perek says, may prove that exposure to UV radiation of broiler chickens up to 9-10 weeks of age will afford pretection to airborne infection of NDV. He has now decided to continue the team's experiments also with other viruses affecting the respiratory tract of birds, e.g. Laryngo Tracheitis, Mycoplasma Galicepticum, infectious bronchitis and other viruses transmitted by air. According to Prof. Perek, the scope of the achievement may be of a highly applied nature. The cost of exposing chickens to UV radiation will reach only 2.5 ago- rot (less than one U.S. cent) per head over a period of 10 weeks. Multiple - vaccination costs the farmer much more for vaccine and labor, approximately 30 ago- rot (some nine cents) per head. An additional positive factor, he points out, is the additional feed efficiency and weight gains in chickens, obtained by UV radia- tion.
