the South African Jewish Board

Sabin Joins Group
Planning Haffkine
Memorial Grove

NEW YORK - Dr. Albert B.
Sabin, president of the Weizmaian
Institute of Science in Israel, has
joined the Haffkine International
Memorial Committee, established
to honor the memory of the noted
Jewish scientist, Waldemar Mor-
decai Haffkine, with the planting
of a memorial grove in the hills
of Judea.
The announcement, by Herman
Weisman, president, and Dr. Mil-
ton Aron, executive vice president,
of the Jewish National Fund of
America, calls attention to the
support of scientists and intellect-
uals who are encouraging this
effort of the Jewish National Fund
to plant the Haffkine Memorial
Grove in Israel.
The Haffkine International

Memorial Committee honors a

man who is credited with creat-
ing the first successful vaccines
against bubonic plague and
cholera. Dr. Haffkine was born
in Odessa and overcame the
many difficulties placed in the
path of promising Jewish stu-
dents. He spent 20 years in India,
where he laid the foundation for
Western modern medical re-
search and practice. During all
his career, he maintained a close
association with Jewish interests,
and displayed a love and enthu-
siasm for the Jewish yearning
to make Palestine a Jewish

Homeland.

Mrs. Edythe Lutzker of New
York City, official historian and
biographer of Haffkine, is serving
as international secretary of the
memorial committee. Plans are
being made to dedicate the Haf-
fkine Memorial Grove in Israel
on the 40th anniversary of his
death, in October.
Headquarters. for the Haffkine
Memorial Grove have been estab-
lished at JNF House, 42 E. 69th
St., New York 10021.
