LISTENING

JULY 30 will mark 55 years of
wedded happiness for Esther and .
Henry Abrahams . . . It was back
in February 1910 that they met in
Brooklyn. N.Y. at the engagement
party of his brother. Martin . . .
Five years later they were married
—thanks to her mother, who said
she should answer only Henry's
letters to her in choice over an-
other fellow . . - He was making
$6 a week as a diamond cutter ap-
prentice . . - and after telling his
boss about getting married, the sal-
ary was doubled to $12 - - Esther '
was making SIO a week as a cash-
ier in a theater ... In three months
they saved enough to furnish a
three-room apartment - . Henry
and Esther moved to Detroit in
1920 ... He was one of the owners
of the nonular Star Recreation on
Linwood and Blaine years back,
and today is general manager of
their son Ray's three billiard
places, including the Cushion 'n
- Cue in Oak Park.

CHECKER BAR-E-a

ARNOLD SYKES believes that
salesmanship can be overdone, as
he found while working in a Chi-
cago department store, fresh out
of school - . - His first customer
was a lady ... He was talking with
her when the boss in passing heard
Arnold saying, "No, ma' . 9m, we
haven't had any in a long time."
. . . "The boy is new here." apoli-
gized the boss. "We can get some
for you from the warehouse, ma-
dam, and if you'll come back •to-
morrow. I'm sure you'll find our
counters full of it." . . . The wo-
man smiled and walked out -
"Now, there was an example of
salesmanship," stormed the boss.
"NEVER say we don't have any-
thing. She'll be hack tomorrow. By
the way, what did she say?" . .
"She said," explained Arnold, "we
haven't had any rain lately."

DETROIT NEWS Sunday Maga-
zine of June 28 had a story about
how local golfer Pete Brown
whipped polio and prejudice .
Winner of the recent San Diego
Open. Pete had been told 14 years
ago at Herman Kiefer Hospital
that he would never play another
round much less win a major PGA
tournament - - . Former Detroiter
Sam Dictor, who helped Pete with
his nutting, is also pictured in the •
Sunday mag article . . . "Dictor,
who never played professional golf.
applied himself to the only part of
the game that didn't require great
stamina—nutting. The result was
amazing. He could one-putt greens
other pros would have been happy
to two-putt. Soon word not around
the tour about Sam and pros be-
gan approaching him for lessons.
They still do." .. . Sam will miss
the links for a short while ... until
he recovers from a recent severe
heart attack.
