SPECIAL "SILLY STANDARDIZED coun- try—America," grumbled a dis- tinguished English advertising man recently as he completed a U. S. lecture tour, his pockets bulging with silly standardized American dollars . . . Outside a Phoenix auto-repair shop: "May we have the next dents?" and "Second-hand cars in first-crash condition." . . . A Dallas dealer has a more subtle approach: "Be a wealthy pedestrian. Offered by a drygoods empo- rium in Allentown, Pennsylvania: "Bath towels for the whole damp family .. -.By a chicken incubator in Vermont: "Cheepers by the doz- en." . . . A furrier in Kalamazoo begs "Be our miss in lynx," and an alert fortune teller in Asbury Park promises: "Your problem solved, or your mania cheerfully refunded." . . . Owners of restaur- ants and grogshops are in the fore- front when the whims blow . . . A tavern keeper in Lexington ad- vises: "If you drive your husband to drink, drive him here." . . . Another sign inside the store warns "If you don't smell it, we ain't got it!" Sixten Ehrling will conduct the Detroit Symphony and pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy in a tribute to Beethoven by performing each of the famed composer's five piano concerti, which began Thursday, in Oakland University's Baldwin Pa- vilion. Ashkenazy returned to Meadow Brook for the fourth consecutive season. On Saturday evening Ash- kenazy and the symphony will per- form the third and fourth concerti. The jazz-folk offerings for 8:30 p.m. today will be vocalist Nina Simone and t rum peter Clark Terry. As mentioned above- Ash- kenazy with Sixten Ehrling and the Detroit Symphony will com- plete the Beethoven tribute Sun- day by playing the concerto num- ber five. For this reason there will not be a symphony pops pro- gram on Sunoay.
