Mrs. Romney Warns Against Birch
Views, Backs Planes for Israel

Mrs. George Romney, candidate
for the Republican nomination for
the U.S. Senate,
this week ex-
pressed concern
over possible re-
actionary moti-
vations among
Michigan voters.
At a visit at
the office of The
Jewish News on
Monday, Lenore
Romney said she
imagine
. "can't
Mrs. Romney people going back
on social and human rights and
principles," and urged that any
evidence of Birchers' intrusions in
political campaigns should be re-
jected by the voters.
Mrs. Romney applauded Presi-
dent Nixon's strong statement in
Israel's behalf last week and
said she is pursuing a long-
established family friendship for
Israel. She declared her urgent
desire to see Israel protected and
urged that planes be provided
Israelis immediately for their
defense.

ciated with the
late Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler, and in
recent years has
work ed closely
with 'Walter
Klein, Stanley J.
Winkelman, Rab-
bi Leon Fram Webb
and representatives of the Bnai
Brith ADL. As associate director
of the Citizens Committee for
Equal Opportunity, he worked
closely with leading communal
figures of all faiths and races.

Cooper Co-Sponsors Bill
to Congress for Jet Sale

State Rep. Daniel S. Cooper
(D-69th District) co-sponsored a
resolution which passed the House
of Representatives memorializing
Congress for the sale of jet planes
and arms to the state of Israel.
The resolution will be sent to
the president of the U.S. Senate,
speaker of the U.S. House of Rep-
resentatives and to each member
of the Michigan delegation in Con-
gress.
Cooper points out that United
States' support of Israel has now
become dilatory and reluctant at
a time when Israel is faced with
overt guerilla warfare and prob-
able full-scale hostilities.
"America's weakening of sup-
port," Cooper continued, "encour-
aged the entry of Soviet interven-
tion with unlimited war materials
to the Arab countries. America's
vacillating position with respect
to Israel's strengthening resulted,
as was predictable, in the effect
of open invitation to escalation."

Taking pride in the fact that
she has been elected an honorary
member of Hadassah, Mrs. Rom-
ney recalled the many Israeli func-
tions she attended with her hus-
band and expressed pride in the
many friendships they established
with Israeli and American Jewish
leaders.

Statecraft Head

Noteworthy WSU Press Books
About Whitman, Yeats, Bertoia

A valuable chapter has been
added to the study of the life of
Walt. Whitman in an important
volume issued by Wayne State
University Press—"Whitman as
Editor of the Brooklyn Daily
Eagle."
While it elaborates on the life
of Whitman, this volume is of spe-
cial significance to newspapermen
since it provides codes, as enunci-
ated by Whitman, and reviews ex-
periences that add to an under-
standing of developing social atti-
tudes.
The Whitman volume is by Prof.
Thomas L. Brasher of Southwest
Texas State University.

WSU Press enriches another
sphere—with the impressive work
by WSU English Professor Bernard
Levine, "The Dissolving Image—
The Spiritual-Esthetic Develop-
ment of W. B. Yeats."
Among the authorities most ex
tensively quoted is former De-
troiter Prof. Richard Ellmann. Lit-
erary students specializing in
poetry, with an inevitable interest
in Yeats, will find this book in-
valuable.

Experiments and techniques of
an eminent sculptor are described
in a large volume issued by WSU
Press.
The life and works of Harry
Bertoia are dealt with in "Harry
Bertoia—Sculptor" by June Kom-
pass Nelson.
The art of the eminent sculptor

"I would caution perspective,"
Lobenthal said. "lifer is a Nazi,
he's anti-Semitic and he's a
racist. At the same time, he's
unpolitic. It's hard to take him
seriously; he has no substance,
so membership and no program."

Lobenthal said that the ADL pre-
fers not to raise the issue wtih
WXYZ at this time, rather than
get embroiled in the issue of cen-
sorship or to "dignify him (Tifer)
with a rejoinder or rebuttal.
"On the other hand, should in-
dividuals call the station and object
to its unpropitious decision to give
this sort of kook air time, that's
okay with me."

Relates Anti-Jew
Platform on TV

Patrick Tiler, leader of the neo-
Nazi Statecraft organization here,
won a television platform Sunday,
when he was interviewed on the
local Spotlight show on Channel 7.
Among the slogans he espoused
during the half-hour show was "the
Jews are through in '72"—in line
with the Statecraft position calling
for the confiscation of Jewish
property, as well as that of liberals
and Blacks.
The Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith which has been "ob-
serving Statecraft for some time,"
according to ADL Director Richard
Lobenthal has received several
calls from irate viewers.
