Synagogue Future Doomed Unless

Experiments Occur - Rabbi Eisendrath

AMSTERDAM (JTA)—The non
violent rebellion of youth all over
the world against "widespread
corruption, bigotry and violence"
is a reflection of social values
which derive from the Hebrew
prophets, Rabbi Maurice N. Eisen-
drath, president of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
(UAHC), told 400 Reform Jewish
leaders from all parts of the world
meeting here at the 16th interna-
tional conference of the World
Union for Progressive Judaism.
The theme of the six-day con-
ference is "Crisis in Belief."
The future of the synagogue will
depend upon whether or not "our
Reform Jewish Establishment will
tolerate experimentation, explora-
tion and innovaton by radical Jew-
ish students," Rabbi Eisendrath
said. But there may be no future
for the synagogue, he added, un-
less we permit such "free lance.
free-wheeling Judaism in action."
The rabbi also criticized those
rabbinic colleagues and Jewish
laymen who believe that the
_state of Israel is the only center
of Jewish life today. He said that
Jewish life has always had more
than one center of focus, and
contended that both Israel and
the diaspora are essential to the
survival of Judaism today.
Religious nonrecognition by Is-
rael of her non-Orthodox communi-
ties was scored by Prof. Ezra
Spicehandler, director of the He-
brew Union College Archeological
Institute in Jerusalem, and by
Rabbi Jacob Shankman of New
York.
Prof. Spicehandler condemned
the lack of permission for "liberal"
rabbis to perform marriages and
other religious ceremonies in Is-
rael. although there are seven
"liberal' congregations in Jerusa-
lem. Tel Aviv and Haifa. He noted
the desire of many to find a re-
ligious alternative to Orthodoxy.

Dr. Shankman, outgoing presi-
dent of the union, announced the
publication of a book describing
what he termed discrimination
against Reform communities in
Israel.

Tallith and Fringes

people cover their bead
with the Tallith during prayer.
Some claim that this is a means
of making man humble in the face
of the Almighty so that he will
be fearful of the Almighty. Others
say that this is done so that man
would wrap himself and cover
himself with the Tallith which
symbolizes the commandments of
the Almighty. There are those who
claim that doing so would aid
a man in concentrating on his
prayers and would prevent him
from being distracted by outside
influences.
Each of the fringes of a Tallith
has eight strands.
Some trace this to the command-
ment in the Bible which uses the
word for fringe in the plural (Ged-
dillin—Twisted Cords). Since the
Bible ordered these cords to be put

The present urge for freedom,
for the liberation of oppressed, for
an end to apartheid in South
Africa, is part of the scholar's
evaluative work dealing with anti-
Semitism and human prejudices.
In many respects, "God's First

all faiths and the role of Jews in
the battle for human decencies is
depicted in many areas.
The Apartheid issue is not over-

aim to establish a just order. Heer

Jews should be more strongly or-

to 1932 when there was not enough
firm action against impending
Hitlerite and other dangers.
Like the churches, he asserts,
Jews then suffered from self-
deceptions and he urges strong
