CITY OF HOPE

• • PRESENT THEIR • •
FIRST ANNUAL PRIVATE
CHARTER BOB-LO ISLAND

Convalescing Israeli soldiers are finding comfort in Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem
under a Tender Loving Care program. The upper left photo shows convalescents brought
from the hospital for the dedication of a synagogue at Ramat Eshkol, a new development on
the once battle•scarred Ammunition Hill adjoining Mount Scopus. In the center of this photo is
Nati, 21, who had lost his speech from a head wound and regained it on Jerusalem Day—the
third anniversary of the reclamation of the Holy City by Israel. The upper right photo shows
a soldier•patient at Hadassah Rehabilitation Center who was encouraged to study. Teachers are
provided to tutor soldiers at their bedsides. Fellow soldiers frequently visit their buddies to
socialize with them, as shown in lower left photo. The lower right photo shows Herb Alpert,
famous trumpeter and leader of the Tijuana Brass, presenting his latest recording to a soldier
whose wife looks on.

(Continued from Page 1)
Dr. Alex Magora, of the reha-
bilitation department, notes that
many paraplegics can get mar-
ried and have children.
While attending the ceremony in
Ramat Eshkol, the soldiers were
happily circulating a postcard from
Uri, a member of Kibutz Kfar
Giladi, who had been badly wound-
ed and was now a paraplegic on
crutches. Uri had been in the
Hadassah Rehabilitation Depart-
ment for many months. The card,
postmarked Paris, said that he and
his wife were "conquering the
length, breadth, and even the cir-
cumference," of the French capi-
tal!

Job Agency Teaches
Parents to Handle
Handicaped Children

ST. LOUIS (JTA)—Facilities to
teach parents how to deal with
handicapped children through par-
ent education groups are included
in the new quarters of the Work
Experience Center of the Jewish
Employment and Vocational Serv-
ice. The project is operated in
cooperation with the St. Louis
special school district for handi-
capped children and the Missouri
division of vocational rehabilita-
tation.
Sid Hurwitz, director of the cen-
ter, said that "nothing confirms
the ability of handicapped youth
and young adults more than ac-
complishment."
New clients are prepared for
shop work in a special booth which
is directed by an aide who works
inside and a staff psychologist who
sits outside the unit, viewing the
client through a one-way mirror.
There is also a communication
system linking the aide and the
psychologist.

Leah, head rehabilitation nurse,
says that the soldiers, despite
their handicaps, maintain an
atmosphere that is as merry as
it is brave. They are constantly
finding excuses to have parties,
and they have many friends whet--
provide the means. One such is a
Jerusalem restaurateur, Yehe-
kial Shemesh, who during the
Six-Day War took an oath that
if his family returned safely, his
restaurant would be open to
wounded soldiers forever. Now,
once a week, all the soldier-
patients are guests of honor at
his restaurant.
Prof. Emil Adler, head of reha-
bilitation, credits some of the al-
most unbelievable adjustments of
paraplegics, tetraplegics and brain-
injured soldiers to the extraordin-
ary devotion of the staff, includ-
ing attention to psychological
aspects of rehabilitation, the ex-
cellent support given by the minis-
try of defense in all respects, and
the remarkable self discipline of
the soldiers in performing thera-
peutic exercises.

German Poll Says 38 Pct.
Pro-Israel, 6 Pct. Anti

DUSSELDORF, W. Germany
(ZINS) — A recent West German
poll of public opinion reveals that
38 per cent of those interviewed
sympathize with Israel, while 6 per
cent favor the Arabs. A total of 48
per cent declared their neutrality,
and 8 per cent have no opinion.
Among the younger generation
there is an overwhelming pro-
Israel sentiment.
Local press reports, summariz-
ing the poll, point out that although
the majority of West Germans sup-
port Israel, the percentage is con-
siderably smaller than two years
ago when a similar opinion poll
was taken.
