This Week in History

(From the files of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
40 Years Ago This Week: 1930

Jewish groups gave the International Wailing Wall Commission a
100-page memo detailing Jewish claims to the wall.
The Jewish National Council urged Poland to "show initiative"
in abolishing Polish Jews' "present catastrophic position."
A New York Supreme Court Justice dismissed a Free Thinkers'
Society suit to bar Bible reading in public schools. The Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis opposed compulsory religious activities
in public schools.
The Yiddish Actors' Union barred its members from appearing in
Yiddish talking pictures, charging they used non-union labor, were not
shown outside of Jewish areas, and were generally injurious to the
reputation of the Yiddish theater.
The House Immigration Committee rejected bills to halve immi-
gration and to give the President authority to suspend all immigration.
Rabbi Solomon Foster of Temple Bnai Jeshurun, Newark, asserted
that American Jewish schools were "frequently hard-pressed, if not
forced into bankruptcy, while our people individually enjoy great luxury
and support all kinds of cultural movements." He said rabbis' sermons
"are adulterated in their Jewish spirit and denuded of Jewish thought
and hope so as to be indistinguishable from an address by a liberal
Christian theologian."
The Central Conference of American Rabbis (Reform) voted to
modernize the "Kol Nidre," retaining only the first two words and
the melody.
The East European economic depression was reported to be placing
many Jewish communities in danger of extinction.

10 Years Ago This Week: 1960

Rabbi Max Schenk, head of Congregation Shaarei Zedek, Brooklyn,
declared that the elimination of Soviet anti-Semitism was "a fraud and
a lie.
Arnold Forster, civil rights chief of the Anti-Defamation League,
reported that the Arab League had a $10,000,000 anti-Israel, anti-Jewish
propaganda machine.
Israeli Premier David Ben-Gurion said France was a "devoted and
loyal friend whose friendship is unconditional."
A Kings County (Brooklyn) Supreme Court Justice issued a war-
rant for the arrest of American Nazi leader Geoge Lincoln Rockwell
for disorderly conduct and inciting to riot. The Washington office of
the Anti-Defamation League urged the federal government to ban
Rockwell rallies as "outright violations of law."
UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold concluded that "the
refugee problem will be with us, I am afraid, forever unless the world
turns more peaceful"
