Psychologist, communal leader
and a master fund-raiser, Shill-
man has made a name for him-
self in each of these fields; bnt,
doing three jobS that would sat-

enough for his vital, dynamic

University and is also Fellow of
the American Psychological As-

rare civilian citations of the U.S.
War. Department for his contribu-

servicemen in the Pacific. During
his five year period in the Pacific,
he established the first synagogue
in Honolulu, which now serves as
the Honolulu Jewish Center.

Allied Campaign
Gets Youth Aid

Although the 1970 Allied Jewish
Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund
is officially over, the local Jewish
community is still thinking in
terms of "What can we do to help
Israel?" While the older generation
is rapidly paying their pledges to
the campaign, youth also is doing
its part.
Twelve-year-old Marty Garber,
son of Dr. and Mrs. Max J. Garber
of Southfield, held a carnival in his
backyard this week-end. He and his
friends collected $12.24 for their
efforts which included games and
contests. Monday morning they
took the money to the office of the
Jewish Welfare Federation at 163
Madison as their contribution to
the campaign.
Those who have not paid their
pledges to the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign-Israel Emergency Fund are
urged to do so as soon as possible
so that funds can go to work im-
mediately helping Jews in every
part of the world.

Honor Tanzman at Akiva Dinner Sunday

Akiva Hebrew Day School's
testimonial dinner Sunday, at Kirts
Community House, 1911 Golfview,
Troy, will honor David S. Tanzman,
president of the school in recogni-
tion of his many services in sup-
port of religious education.
In a statement of tribute to
Tanzman, the school administra-
tion declared:
"As Akiva Hebrew Day School
enters its seventh year offering
classes from nursery to ninth
grade, President Tanzman views
the cohesive spirit underlying the
success of the school as a delicate
but disciplined blending of philo-
sophical, religious and pragmatic
drives. This doctrine, he feels, will
cultivate the highest standards of
character training and moral de-
velopment."
Tanzman is special assistant to
the regional director of the Fed-
eral Mediation and Conciliation
Service. A devoted student of the
Talmud he was the co-founder of
three synagogues.
Born in New York, the youngest
of five children, in a traditionally
Jewish home, he helped to battle
the depression years with various
income-developing activities while
attending school and completing
Talmud Tora studies at 13.
His college education, interrupt-
ed in 1941 because of family econ-
omic needs was resumed in 1953
and culminated in 1963 with Phi
Beta Kappa and a Bachelor's de-
gree from Wayne State University.
Entering government service in
1941 with National Defense Media-
tion Board, Tanzman moved up-
ward in government mediation
work, leaving for a two-year stint
of European military duty from
1944 to 1946. He was named a field
chaplain and was given the respon-
sibility for funeral arrangements
for the late General George S. Pat-
