Applications Issued for Federation Appartments Residencies THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, Jame 26, 1970-11 Applications for residency in the Federation Apartments are being mailed next week, Joseph H. Jackier, president, announced. The 15-story high-rise, designed for senior citizens, is under con- struction in Oak Park at 15100 West 10 Mile Road, east of Green- field. It is expected that it will be ready for occupancy in the spring of 1971. Applicants must be at least 62 years of age and meet certain health and income requirements. "Those who have already made inquiries or written to the Jewish Welfare Federation about the apartments need not call again. They will automatically be sent an application form," said Jackier. A brochure explaining the re- quirements and describing the apartments will be sent out with the applications. Questicns and answers on the requirements for applicants for the apartment are printed below. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ABOUT FEDERATION APARTMENTS Where is the building located? Federation Apartments is a 15-story apartment designed for senior citi- zens. The building is under construc- tion at 15100 West 10 Mile Road, Oak Park, east of Greenfield. Who may live at Federation Apart- ments? There will be room for 225 men and women 62 years of age and °Mar, who meet the income requirement outlined in paragraph B. If two peo- ple are living together, one may be less than 62 years of age. When will Federation Apartments be ready for occupancy? If all goes according to schedule. occupancy will begin in the spring of 1971. What type of apartments are available? There are 168 apartments of which 112 are efficiencies and 56 are one- bedroom units. Each apartment is electrically heated with individual thermostatic control. They are un- furnished, except for kitchen appli- ances and carpeting. Maid service v.1.11 not be provided. Who may apply for an apartment? Single persons (unmarried, widowed. etc.) may apply for efficiency apart- ments. Couples or two other persons —such as mother and daughter ur two friends—may apply for one-bed- room apartments. What are the rentals? Approximate rents for efficiencies will range from $85 to $115 per month. One-bedroom apartments (for 2 persons) will rent for about 5120 to 5148 per month. There will also be a charge of approximately $40 month- ly per person to cover the cost of one kosher meal a day in the central din- ing room. Rentals include all utilities except telephone. What are the income limitations? Federation ApartMents was financed by a loan from the Federal Govern- ment which must be repaid from rents. The income limits are specified under the Government program. A tenant living alone can not have more than an annual income of S4,500. The combined income of a husband and wife may not exceed 55,400. The combined income of two other per.1 sons sharing an apartment may not exceed $6.600. What assets and other forms of income will be considered? The application form asks for confi- dential information ocncerning all forms of income and assets. This will include salary and wages (whether full-time or part-tlme), interest on savings accounts, stocks, bonds, social security, retirement or pension pay- I ments, welfare benefits, financial contributions from relatives. etc. In- formation is required for both hus- band and wife. How will tenants get their meals? One kosher meal will be served every day in a central dining room. Each tenant is required to pay S40 per month for this meal. Each apartment is equipped with a kitchen where all other meals may be prepared by the tenant. Will there be provisions for religious observances? The spirit of the Jewish Holidays will be observed. Near-by synagogues offer religious services. The adjacent branch of the Jewish Community Cen- ter may also provide staff and faci- lities for recreation, social, and Jew- ish cultural programs for occupants. The meal served in the central din- ing room will be prepared in accord- ance with Jewish dietary laws. The building is convenient to a variety of shops, especially those catering to Jewish households. flow will emergencies be handled? No facilities for medical care are available in the building. Tenants will continue to be served by their own physicians. Each apartment has an emergency call button to reach assist- ance throughout day or night. The staff of Federation Apartments will attempt to meet emergency situations requiring immediate attention. This will not include diagnosis or treat- ment of a tenant, nor will the staff be able to assist the tenant's per- sonal physician in treatment Of the tenant. It is a "pilot" program In the sense that experience gained here will help the organized Jewish community determine the need for and variety of further facilities. Federation Apartments, Inc., was formed to assume responsibility for constructing the building and operating it. The department's program adds an- other facet to the Detroit community's services to the elderly which are co- ordinated through the J.W.F. The Jew- ish Community Center, Jewish Family and Children's Service, Jewish Home for Aged. Sinai Hospital assisted in formulating the apartment residence plans and will continue to co-operate in this program. Urged to Build Bomb Shelters JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Knes- set finance committee called on the government to speed up the construction of bomb-proof shelters and security bunkers in the border areas and public shelters through- out the country.
