CARY. 341-8880 Jewish Merchants in Philadelphia Ghettoes Now Minority, Says Study PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — Jew- ish merchants are still present in substantial numbers in Philadel- phia's inner city areas but they no longer constitute a majority of such merchants and their number is expected to continue to decrease, according to a new study. The study was made by the Jew- ish Community Relations Council and Temple University's Center for Community Studies. It was held to develop a program of help to Jew- ish businessmen in ghetto areas, according to Theodore Mann, JCRC president. He said that the problem has been a major issue since the ghetto riots of 1964. ac- cording to the Jewish Exponent. The data in the report were based on the views of Jewish mer- chants who were interviewed. The Jewish merchants uniformly ex- pressed the view that most of the residents who lived in the ghetto areas six years ago had since moved. to better neighborhoods, leaving behind residents with few- er years of education and insemes below the poverty level crd of the federal government.
