Report on Behavioral Sciences Research Issued by Szold Institute

:No important contribution to re-
search in behavioral sciences is
contained in the Jerusalem report
of the Henrietta Szold Institute's
Ruth Bressler Center for Research
in Education, .Jerusalem.
Using as its title the quotation
from Deuteronomy 13:15 "Then
shalt thou enquire, and make
search,' and ask diligently," the
report on three years activities

contains analyses of the current
projects : Studies on culturally
disadvantaged children, informal
education, planning stages of vari-
ous studies conducted by the insti-
tute.
The progress report is dedicated
to the memory of Menahem (Max)
Bressler, late president of the
Zionist Organization of America
and the Jewish National Fund of

America.
The relative im p ortance of vari-
ous aspects of behavioral problems
are thoroughly reviewed and the
results are illustrated to show the
esperimental factors in teaching.
The report throws light on many
interesting elements in studies con-
ducted in Israeli schools and the
comparative methods in the be-
havioral research.

2 Volumes by Dr. Yehuda Bauer Emphasize
Heroism of Jews Who Resisted the Nazis,
Depict Courage in Building of Statehood

Two volumes by a distinguished
Israeli scholar cover vast fields el'
research dealing with a variety of
related subjects—with the dramatic
story of the escape of Jews- who
survived the Holocaust from East-
ern Europe, into Israel, and the
story of the Jewish struggle for
independence in Palestine. prior to
the rebirth of Israel.

Dr. Yehuda Bauer, Who heads
the Hebrew University Department
of holocaust Studies of the Insti-
tute of Contemporary Jewry, is the
author of "From Diplomacy to Re-
sistance — A History of Jewish
Palestine 1939-1945," published by
the Jewish Publication Society of
America. and "Flight From Res-
cue: Brichah—The Organized Es-
cape of the Jewish Survivors of
Eastern Europe, 1944-1948." pub-
lished by Random House.

The latter, part of the Contem-
porary Jewish Civilization Series
was
as issued by the Institute of Con-
temporary Jewry of the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. edited by
Dr. Moshe Davis. The , JPS volume
was translated from the Hebrew
by Alton M. Winters. The transla-
tion was financed by the .IPS Adolf
Anirani Fund.

Because they deal with the
rescue and the escapes from the
Nazi terror as well as with the
defensive activities in Israel's
upbuilding, the two volumes are
complementary. As a member of
Kibutz Shoval in the Negev, as
an activist in the Palmakh in
Israel's war of liberation, Dr.
Bauer writes authoritatively.
The vast research that went into
the creation of the two books
lends them great significance as
historic records of a significant
period in history.

"Brichah" means flight. Thcf
story as related by Dr. Bauer is of
heroism in making the flight pos-
sible. It is a deeply moving ac-
count of the men and women who
were engaged in the underground
activities of providing the means
for escape and who were the res-
cuers of the sufferers from Nazism,
the war, the indifference of a
world that was fighting Nazism but
nevertheless was silent on the
question of the plight of the Jews.

Not only the heroes who conduct-
ed the rescue work, but the transit
areas similarly are important.
Poland was a major area of action.
Besides Germany there were Ro-
mania and Hungary, and the labors
were immense, filled with dan-
gers, replete with obstacles.

and of the sufferers from
Nazism who did not always
to terror.

There are assessments of various
departmental approaches and of
instruments for post-elementary
schools with resultant conclusions
that can serve as guideS fur simi-
lar programs throughout' the world.

While Arab governments have
spurned suggestions of refugee

scale repatriation, the Israelis
have dealt with the problem in a
more realistic fashion. According
to Israeli Foreign Minister Abba
Eban, the refugee problem must
be solved both regionally and
internationally since neither Israel
