NEW YORK-Dr. Philip R. Gold-
stein, a pioneer in the Jewish cen-
ter movement in the U.S. and a
member of the staff of the Na-
tional Jewish Welfare Board from
1920 until his retirement in 1961,
died here Sunday at age 79.
Dr. Goldstein entered the cen-
ter field in 1920 as a field secre-
tary for the National Council of
Young Men's Hebrew and Kindred
Associations, the predecessor of
the National Jewish Welfare Board
(JWB). As a field secretary and
director of Jewish center cam-
paigns, Dr. Goldstein helped raise
capital funds for new center and
YM-YWCA buildings and Mainte-
nance in scores of cities, including
Detroit.
In 1942 Dr. Goldstein joined the
staff of ..TWB's fund-raising divi-
sion, and became its director in
1945. He served in this post until
1951. Until his retirement he
served as the division's admini-
strative secretary.
