HAL GORDON'S band recen ly
played the Miss Detroit Contest a
Masonic Temple, and he invited
Sammy and Ann Woolf to attend
. . . "There'll be tickets waiting
for you under the name of Gor-
don," said Hal . . Sammy and
Ann went to Masonic, asked for
the Gordon tickets and were usher-
ed to magnificent seats near the
stage . . "Boy!" exclaimed Sam-
my, "Hal sure has a big orchestra
tonight!" . . . It wasn't long,
though, before he and Ann realized
they were at the opera! . . Sam-
my and Ann had gone to the wrong
box office and were given the tick-
ets of another Gordon!
JO-ANN WOLK is a self-made
young lady . . . Usually a relative
will present a child with the honor
of being made a junior life mem-
ber in the City of Hope Cancer
Fighters ... but the young daugh-
ter of Phyliss and Iry Wolk saved
the necessary money needed out
of her own baby sitting earnings.
MORRIE FELSENFELD offers
his essay on a banana by a Japan-
ese boy, "Bananas are remarkable
fruit. Him constructed same style
as Melican sausage but skin of
sausage consumed while it not
advisable to eat ripping-off part
of banana." (Ripping—eh what?
Ah so!)
FANNIE GREENBERG, a resi-
dent at the Jewish Home for the
Aged, who recently passed on at
91, was noted for the hundreds of
yarn dolls and toys she made for
sick and needy children ... A year
before her passing, the following
was written by Ellen Sachs, 80-
year-old resident at the Borman
Hall . . . "The most interesting
person I know, is the woman who
works next to me in the workshop
at the Jewish Old Folks Home.
She is 90 years old and her name
is Fanny Greenberg. Only every-
one calls her Fanala with a great
affection. Fanny's parents and
grandparents lived next to a sol-
dier's barracks and did all the
sewing for the soldiers. The fam-
ily was very hospitable and always
had the kettle on the stove for tea
whenever the soldiers came in.
Fanny inherited the ability to sew
and her greatest pleasure now is to
sew doll dresses and send them to
the hospitals for the sick children.
The dress I liked was a bridal
gown.
HOW THEY met 50 years ago
was told at 75th birthday party for
hubby Carl Berghoff by wife Rose
.. She had come to Detroit as a
young girl named Rose Phillips
and gotten a job as telephone
operator . . . One day a woman's
voice asked, "Viffle is da zeiger?"
. . . Back came Rose's answer,
"Halb nuk zwelif" ... At the other
end of the phone came the scream,
"A Yiddish operator! (In those
days it wasn't considered a proper
job for a nice Jewish girl) . . . So
all day long, Rose's switchboard
would light up and the question
asked over and over again, "Viffle
is the zeiger?" . .. At the end of
the day and her patience, Rose
answered, "Viffle is the shear?"
. But she made a date with
her tormentor to meet outside the
building . . . Rose Berghoff (now
Levenstine) took Rose Phillips the
operator home for dinner, where
she met brother Carl ... Romance
blossomed and fated her to even-
tually obtain the exact same name
as her tormentor!
