issued a state-
ment urging im-
mediate action in
Israel's defense.
The Celler-
Ford statement
had the strong
support of Rep.
John Conyers of
Detroit, Rep.
Donald Riegle of
Flint, John Din-
Rep. Riegle
gell of Dearborn,
James G. O'Hara of Utica and
William Broomfield, Oakland
County. A majority, 214, of the
435 members of Congress signed
the letter.
In his letter to President, Con-
gressman Conyers stated:
"It is clear to us that the mom-
ent has arrived for the United
States to take firm action to meet
the present danger posed by the
involvement of the Soviet Union
military forces in the Middle East.
In the face of this threat, we be-
lieve that it is urged that our gov-
ernment provide Israel with addi-
tional supersonic jet planes to en-
able her to deter aggression
against her.
"It is public knowledge that the
Soviet-Arab aircraft strength is
now four times the strength of tbt
of Israel and that the presence of
Soviet fliers and technicians may
adversely affect Israel's hereto-
fore qualitative advantage.
"The Congress is vitally con-
cerned with the threat of Soviet
presence in the Middle East, as
evidenced by the number of signa-
tories hereto, and by the letter
sent to the Secretary of State
which was signed by over seventy
Senators, urging the immediate
sale of these planes so vital to the
preservation of the balance and
peace in the Middle East."
WASHINGTON (JTA)—Secre-
tary of State William P. Rogers
and Joseph J. Sisco, assistant
secretary of state for Near Eas-
tern affairs, met this week with
the immediate sale of 25 more
Phantom and 10 more Skyhawk
jets to Israel. It was reported that
Rogers promised a decision
"shortly."
At the White House, President
Nixon, speaking to 119 high school
students designated "Presidential
scholars," said in the course of
his impromptu remarks that "the
Middle East' is bubbling up and
ready to explode again." A few
moments later he said: "The Mid-
dle East is about to go up."
Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York
Republican, one of the 10 sena-
tors, indicated he was encouraged
by the meeting with Rogers and
Sisco. He told the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency: "One thing comes
through—there is no change in
American policy toward the pre-
servation of Israel." He said the

Editor, The Jewish News:
In the Sunday Detroit News
Garner (of June Brown's Detroit)
tells of her experience at a Bar
Mitzva. She tells of the pain and
anguish she felt "at a happy time
like this."
She says, "As Marc read he
could reach across eternity and
hold hands with his ancestors
. . . I too, long to reach across
time, like young Marc, to call my
ancestors' names, to touch their
hands. I want to honor them by
speaking the language they spoke.
But when I reach backwards, time
is empty and I am alone."
With what anguish do we, the
"square" generation, watch the
thousands of Mares reject and
spurn the "chain of life with our
living and with our dead." They
cry alienation and embracing new
philosophies they discard their
time-honored tradition without even
a glance back. Why can't we stop
this deluge of our youth to his-
toric oblivion?
Sincerely,
MRS. JOSHUA SPERKA

(Editor's Note: In Mrs. Gar-
ner's touching and insightful
piece, she also said: "Marc read
clearly, confidently, surrounded
by traditions that were timeless
and by rituals that will never
end. It was as though for one
small moment he had the power

Mourning the Dead
Editor, The Jewish News:
In Israel, in Avivim, in Tiberias,
in Beisan, the families of the am-
bushed mourn the dead .. .
All Israel mourns the misfor-
tunes!
All those whose hearts beat
along with those of Israel, mothers
and fathers, parents, children, are
in mourning . .
And I, a grandmother of two 6-
year-olds, was spared this tra-
gedy .. .
We hope for peace in Israel, in
the Arab lands; but let us remem-
ber those unhappy victims of a now
unhappy Israel that must survive
even such tribulations; an Israel
that, with our help, WILL survive.
