ORT Film Honored Again
in American Film Festival

NEW YORK—"The Making Of
a Man," a film made by Women's
American ORT on the ORT net-
work in Iran, has captured a red
ribbon at the American Film Fes-
tival held recently at the New
York Hilton Hotel.
Already a winner of the Na-
tional Council on Jewish Audio-
Visual Materials award for the
most outstanding 16mm film of
Jewish interest produced in 1969,
it has been shown on television in
the New York area and across the
nation.
A half-hour color documentary,
produced and directed by Harold
B. Mayer, "The Making Of a Man"
compresses the history of a Jew-
ish community which had lived in
Persia since the time of Cyrus.

Lost and Found Recipes
Quiet often I get sweet letters
from my readers asking me for
old-time recipes. Not all of those
delicious recipes are known today,
and only a few appear in cook-
books. I would like to mention
some of those requests, and if
anyone of you knows how to pre-
pare the forgotten delicacies —
please let me know too.
For example, the mother of one
reader used to pr e par e DRY
TEIGLACH at Passover time. They
were hard pieces about half by
three-quarter inch, ginger flavored
with sugar on the outside. The
other thing she used to make was
a drink called MED or MEAD. It
was a sort of beer made from
hops and honey and allowed to
ferment. It was clear and sweet
with the taste of hops in the back-
ground. So, if you can help out —
write to me, care of your news-
paper.
The following recipe is also a
fulfillment of a request. The ques-
tion was how to prepare Calledic
Mundlech — a candy-like prepara-
tion of mainly poppy-seed and
some other ingredients which made
a fairly crisp candy, about a quar-
ter of an inch thick, and in pieces
of about 2 by 3 inches. Well, my
dear reader, here it is. I must
tell you that I prepared it in my
kitchen and everyone liked it very
much.

B-oz. poppy seed (4 small pkgs.)
B-oz. honey (one small jar)
3-oz. slivered almonds (1 small pkg.(
4 big tablespoons sugar
Powered sugar
1. Pour boiling water over the poppy
seed and rinse it well. Drain all the
water through a fine sieve.
2. Boll the honey and the sugar over
medium heat. When bubbly, add the
Poppy-seed and almonds. Stir with a
wooden spoon and continue boiling
for about 20 minutes. The mixture
should be almost dry, and when a
drop of it Is put in a cup of cold
water it should become a soft ball.
Be careful not to burn the mixture
so stir well with the spoon.
3. Put the hot mixture on a greased
teflon cookie sheet. Spread and press
with a spoon so It comes to on even
thickness of a quarter Inch. Cut into
squares while still warm. Let it cool
and remove from sheet. You may use
a spatula. Sprinkle with powdered
sugar. It will absorb any moisture.

It is nearly as far from Iron-
wood in Michigan's Upper Penin-
sula to Detroit as it is from De-
troit to New York City.
