"Ion Exchange and Solvent Ex-

Dr. Yizhak 'Marcus, professor of,
inorganic and analytical chemistry
and Dr. Aviezer Stevan Kertes,
associate professor of inorganic
and analytical chemistry, both of
the Hebrew University of Jeru-

sian. Profs. Marcus and Kertes
recently received letters to this
effect from Dr. Yuriel Alexandro-
vitch Zolotov, of the Institute of
Geochemistry and Analytical Chem-
istry of Vernandski at the Acad-
emy of Sciences, Moscow, inform-
ing them that he and Prof. K. V.
Chmutov have suggested to the
Mir Publishing House that the book
be translated into Russian and that
this offer has now been accepted.
Translation into Russian is now
under way.
Apparently political differences
cannot overcome scholarly cordial-
ity, for the letters concluded with
Dr. Zolotov's hope that he will
meet the Israeli scientists at the
Solvent Extraclion Conference to
be held soon at The Hague.

Derivation of Name `Segal'

Segal was originally a title af-
fixed to the name of one who stem-
med from the tribe of Levi. This
person is still referred to today as
a Levite. The title Segal was an
abbreviation for "Segan Leviya"
or "Segal L'Kohan," i.e. an "assist-
ant to the Kohen," which was the
function of the Levites in the tem-
ple of old when they sang the
Psalms during the sacrifices or
even today when the Levite washes
the hands of the Kohen before the
latter offers the priestly benedic-
tion in the synagogue. When Jews
were forced to adopt last names,
the Levites simply used this title
as a last name. Once the name
came to be used, even some who
are not necessarily Levites have
assumed the name so that the
name Segal is not always to be
taken as proof that the bearer of
the name is a Levite.
