The Best of Everything

By Danny Raskin

STRICTLY CRUSTACEAN . . .
that's Chuck Muer's new place
called Charlie's Crab out Pine
Lake Rd. . . . and it's excellent!
. . You'd never recognize the old
Rotunda Inn except for a few land-
marks ... Both outside and inside
hang dozens of lobster traps that
fishermen use to gather their haul
. . . The decor is as you'd imagine
—sea faring, from rope and can-
vas menu to dory and ship's steer-
ing column . . . About the food—
its among the finest! .. . Just
about every crustacean imagine-
able is served by waitresses who
have undergone a complete train-
ing program on the whys and
wherefores of dining at Charlie's
Crab . . If you like lobsters,
crabs, shrimp, oysters, clams
(Ipswich, etc.), you'll love Char-
lie's Crab! . . . As Chuck Muer
puts it, eating at his new place is
a relaxing experience ... If you're
in a big hurry come some other
time!
WASN'T TOO LONG ago when
a woman asked the owner of a
plush restaurant in New York if
she could enter wearing pants .. .
"Only, madam," he said, "if you
are a lamp chop."
STOPPED IN AT the Baskin-
Robbins 31 Flavors ice cream par-
lor on 9 Mile Rd. in Oak Park ..
and got into a mystery guessing
game ... Everybody knows what's

Encore!

The
Billy
Maxted
Band

plays again
at

in the 31 yum yums, but now
there's a number 32 which I was
asked to taste and try to guess
its ingredients . . . Did you ever
eat a delicious new .ice cream cone
and try to think at the same time?
. . . No dice!
THE BILLY MAXTED Band, one
of the most popular attractions
ever to play the Cabaret La Bo-
heme, is back for its third engage.
ment atop the Hotel Pontchartrain.
ABOUT WINES, 1961 was an ex-
cellent year . . . 1962 and 1964 far
above average . . . 1968 very good
and 1969 very bad.
1965 FAVORITE . . . The cus
tomer complaining to the waitress
that the chicken he served him had
one leg shorter than the other, and
the waiter saying. "Look, are you
gonna eat it or rhumba with it?"
HELLO FROM songstress Sandy
Moffett in Aruba, Dutch West
Indies . . . next stop, Desert Inn
in Las Vegas.
THE OFT-TOLD STORIES that
Mexican food is hot are only as
true as the person's plate will al-
low . . . Like any other food it
can be prepared as hot or as mild
as one's taste desires . . . At Taco-
rama on W. 9 Mile Rd. just west
of Woodward in Ferndale, John
Carmona prepares his delicacies
mild . . . and as the customer's
buds will allow for enjoyment,
he'll make them accordingly . . .
John's little 40-seater spot (his
second place opened last week on
Mack in Grosse Pointe) serves
Mexican favorites that include
Burritos (a soft flour tortilla rolled
with round ground beef and beans
and covered with chili), Tacos
(made with corn shell tortillas with
ground round beef, lettuce, tomato
and onion), Tostados (a flat corn
tortilla, with beans, lettuce, toma-
to, onions and grated cheese),
tamales, etc. . . . For the less
adventuresome, John has a real
good steak sandwich, fish and
chips, coney islands, and that old
American favorite, the good old
hamburger sandwich.
OF ALL THE remedies that
absolutely won't cure a cold. whis-
key is by far the most popular.
OVERHEARD AT . . . "RA-
LEIGH .HOUSE, "Now that all the
drive-in theaters are open, people
have quit watching movies again. '
. . MARTY'S DELI, "Well, if
your wife wants to drive, don't
stand in her way . . . RIB 'N
HASTAK, "A man is only as old
as he looks—and if he only looks,
he's old." . . . CLAM SHOP, "A
woman's word is never done."
CARL'S CHOP HOUSE, "She's so
ugly her face looks like its done
up in curlers." . . . HOA KOW,
"The nudist was so strict be
wouldn't even allow dressing on
his sandwich." . . . SKANDIA,
"What do you send to a sick flor-
ist?" . . . LARCO'S, "I know a
guy who's really flabby. In fact,
he's got so many double chins, he
needs a bookmark to find his col-
lar!"

Macomb County health officials,
having completed extensive tests,
say that the intestinal disorder
that hit a dozen guests at the
Arethusa Hotel, Mount Clemens
during Passover was a virus infec-
tion, not food poisoning.
The department's deputy direc-
tor of environmental health, Frank
Murphy, said investigators ruled
that the illness was a communic-
able enteric virus.

Thought breeds thought. It grows

NEW YORK (JTA)—The New
York Stock Exchange has signed
a consent agreement with the City
Commission on Human Rights to
permit observant Jews to wear
skullcaps, as required by their
faith, in all areas of the exchange,
including trading floor sections, at
any time, the commission an-
nounced at a press conference
Tuesday.
The agreement was negotiated
by Howard Rhine, an attorney
who is vice president of the Na-
tional Jewish Commission on Law
and Public Affairs (COLPA).
The agreement stemmed from a
complaint filed with the commis-
sion by Abraham Goldstein of For-
est Hills, an exchange employe,
who said he had initially been per-
mitted to wear his skullcap at
work on his agreement not to do
on the trading floor to avoid "dis
turbing the brokers."
The 25-year-old tube operator
filed his complaint in January
when a supervisor ordered him
to doff the skullcap on an upper
level of the exchange. The em-
ploye charged religious dis-
crimination.
In announcing the agreement,
Mrs. Elinor Norton, commission
chairman, said also that the corn-

mission was sending to all 1,400
employment agencies in New York
City a letter advising about city
laws barring religious discrimina-
tion, including discri min a t i o n
against Sabbath-observing job ap-
plicants.
