Dropsie University Acquires Rare

PHILADELPHIA — Microfilm
copies of over 400 rare manuscripts
in the Vatican Library in Rome
have been acquired by Dropsie
University, it was announced by
Dr. Abraham I. Katsh, president
of the post-graduate institution.

The material represents approxi-
mately half of the entire collection
at the Vatican's Institute of He-
brew Manuscripts. The collection
includes 531 codices dating back to
84 CE, in addition to some 200
fragments, many of which are of
great importance to Hebraica
scholars but have not as yet been
catalogued.
The manuscripts at the 'Vatican,
said Dr. Katsh, include much rare
biblical and talmudic material
and historical letters going back to
Rabbis Ben Ezra, Gershon and
Maimonides, and other commen-
taries by famous scholars of the
"Golden Age" of Spain. Also in-
cluded are prayer books for vari-
ous holidays and commentaries on

laws pertaining to Kashrut.

Dr. Katsh said that Dropsie
eventually hopes to acquire copies

of the remaining half of the
Vatican collection. The material
will greatly augment the microfilm
library at Dropsie which already

includes thousands of manuscripts

and rare Judaica documents which
Dr. Katch acquired from the gov-
ernment libraries in the Soviet
Union and Hungary. Like the
Vatican material, it has previously
been unavailable to Western
scholars.

Dropsie University will partici-
pate for the first time in an
archeological expedition this
summer to excavate a synagogue
in Israel. Dr. Katsh said that the
dig will be a joint enterprise
with the American School of
Oriental Research and the uni-
versities of Harvard, Duke,
Drew and Minnesota.

The archeological dig, said Dr.
Katsh, will be to find the ruins of
the synagogue of Rabbi Shammai, '
known as Khirbet Shema, which
have been untouched and whose
importance was first noted by the
Israel Department of Antiquities.
The site is located ten miles west
of Safad at Heron, a Galilean
town of the Second Temple period
lasting through the Roman and
early Byzantine age (100 BCE-600
CE). It is the heart of an area
known to be populated both by
Jews and Christians in the early
centuries of the common era where
some 16 ancient synagogues have
already been identified.
Dr. Katsh and Dr. Charles T.
Fritsch, professor of Greek at
Dropsie, Will be among the 70 peo-

ple in the expedition, comprising
