Seminary Students for Peace to Lecture Against U.S. Policy in SE Asia
NEW YORK (JTA — The Stu-
dents for Peace organization of
the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America, the Conservative insth
tution. has set up a speaker's
bureau to send seminary students
to speak to Jewish groups on be-
half of efforts to mobilize Jewish
public opinion against U.S. par-
ticipation in the Vietnam War, the
seminary announced Tuesday.
The statement said that the stu-
dents will discuss, before synago-
gues. schools, youth and other
groups in the Jewish community,
"the moral issues involved in the
escalation and expansion of the
war in Indo-China and the growing
violence in our cities. They will
inform the Jewish public of their
planes to mobilize public opinion
against the war and outline pos-
sible courses of action which can
be taken by concerned individ-
uals."
The Students for Peace Group,
comprised of students from the
Teachers Institute-Seminary Col-
lege of Jewish Students, and the
seminary's rabbinical school,
will lobby in Washington for the
passage of antiwar legislation
and canvass communities to
develop support for such legis-
lation, the announcement said.
The students will speak at Ramah
camps, sponsored by the Conserva-
tive Jewish movement, during the
summer "and explore with other
young people the forms of political
action possible within the frame-
work of a Democratic society and
the Jewish tradition."
The rabbinical adviser to the
Radical Jewish Union at Columbia
University said. following his sec-
ond arrest on charges of disrupting
services at Temple EmanmEl last
Friday, that the IOU planned a
fourth visit to the Reform syna-
gogue today.
Rabbi A. Bruce Goldman and
Anne Rosen, a Barnard University
graduate, were arrested after they
had led a group of 30 R.IU mem-
bers into the sanctuary of the
largest Reform synagogue in the
world in an effort to protest she
war in Southeast Asia and to pre-
sent a number of demands to the
congregation.
Rabbi Goldman and Miss Rosen
were booked for arraignment.
Rabbi Goldman and Victor Levin,
who were arrested on similar
charges after services at Temple
Emanu-El May 15, face trial on
those charges in New York crim-
inal court today.
Miss Rosen was taken from the
sanctuary after she had climbed
over a railing between the first
row of pews and the bima. She had
reached the microphone when
ushers and plainclothesmen caught
up with her. As they dragged her
froin the pulpit, she shouted "I am
a Jew in a synagogue. How can
you arrest me?"
Rabbi Nathan Perilman, sen-
ior rabbi, had informed the RJU,
before the first visit on May 15,
that he would call police to deal
with any attempt to seize the
pulpit. Rabbi Goldman said he
had been informed that the
temple was applying for an in-
junction to bar the RJU from
further appearances at services.
He added that the group would
not be deterred by an Injunction.
A group of RJU members came
to the temple on May 22, took part
in responsive readings and depart-
ed without incident.

for the forsaking of "violence" in
quelling campus disorders.
They also called for the cessa-
tion of "abusive" and "inflamma-
tory" language on the part of both
political leaders and campus mili-
tants. Rabbi Joseph Karasick, the
Orthodox leader, asserted that the
"needless deaths" of students at
Kent State University and at Jack-
son State College were "in sub-
stantial measure an outgrowth of
the lack of communication bewteen
those who guide America's destiny
and those who are America's
future."
In Washington, Rabbi Maurice
N. Eisendrath, president of the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, was one of the 1,000
rabbis, priests and ministers who
came here this week to mobilize
congressional support to end the
war in Indo-China.
The "Emergency Religious
Convocation" was sponsored by
SO religious leaders, declared
that "no further military expen-
ditures should be authorized nor
appropriations voted without
clear and definite provisions for
the termination of U.S. military
operations in Southeast Asia."
They also called for a definite
deadline for U.S. withdrawal
from the area.

and development.
The Jewish National Fund is the
land reclamation and afforestation
arm of the world Zionist move-
ment. Essentially, it serves as the
instrumentality of Jews for the
acquisition and development of
land in Israel.
Founded in 1901, JNF today is
the exclusive land agent of the Is
rael government. It is responsible
for reclaiming the soil, planting
trees and forests_ building roads,
draining swamps and generally
preparing land for Jewish settle-
ment.
Since 1948. when Israel attained
statehood, JNF has planted 95,000,-
000 trees, built more than 3,000
kilometers of roads, and establish-
ed 225 rural settlements.
Nearly one third of Israel's total
population lives on Jewish National
Fund land.
At approximately the same
time Detroit's JNF Council was
founded, the national agency of
the organization began its affor-
estation program in Israel. Tree
planting was carried out only on
lands unsuitable for farming or
pasture. The trees softened the
often barren landscape, provid-
ed recreation areas and laid the
base of a lumbering industry.
Today, JNF forests yield be-
tween 25,000 and 30.000 tons of
timber per year. The afforestation
program also plays a major role
in stabilizing a high rate of em-
ployment.
