Leslie Gutterman First Native
of Flint to Become a Rabbi

Leslie Y. Gutterman, son of Dr.
and Mrs. David D. Gutterman of
Kensington Ave., Flint, will be
ordained a rabbi Saturday at com-
mencement exercises of the Cin-
cinnati School of Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Reli-
gion.
Gutterman is a graduate of the
University of
Michigan, receiv-
his BA degree in
English liter a-
ture in 1964.
While preparing
for ordination at
the College-Insti-
tute, he served
as student rabbi
of congragations
in Alpena, Rome, Gutterman
Ga., and Martinsburg, W. Va. He
was the recipient of a partial
scholarship for study in Israel dur-
ing the academic year 1968-69. He
received his bachelor of Hebrew
letters in 1967 and upon comple-
tion of his studies Gutterman will
be awarded the degree of master
of arts in Hebrew letters.
Following ordination, Rabbi
Gutterman has been elected to
serve as assistant rabbi of Tem-
ple Beth El in Providence,
where he and his wife, the form-
er Julie Nagler of Detroit, will
be moving July 1.
He is the grandson of the late

Mr. and Mrs. Louis A. Werbe of
Flint and the first member of the
Flint Jewish community to be
ordained a rabbi.

This a double "simha" for the
Guttermans, whose son Robert
Bruce has been named a Regents-
Alumni scholar by the University
of Michigan for the year 1970-71.
He was awarded the scholarship
in recognition of academic
achievement in high school, where
he also is a member of the Na-
tional Honor Society.

to Europe and Israel sponsored by
the Young Leadership Cabinet of
the UJA.
The July 6-July 26 tour includes
four days in Rome, air travel,
first-class hotel a c comodations,
two ' meals a day and tips. It is
open to persons age 25-40.
Dr. Jack Stanzler and Dr. Ira
Marder, co-chairmen of the newly
formed missions committee, de-
scribed this mission as a "fine
opportunity for American Jews to
see Israel, receive confidential
briefings by leaders of the country
and to really understand the tre-
mendous things that are happen-
ing in Israel."
As in past study missions to
Israel, this group will visit
kibutzim and have opportunities
to communicate with Israelis
from all walks of life. In addi-
tion, there will be time for visit-
ing with families and shopping.
Those interested in participating
are invited to make reservations
through the Flint Jewish Commun-
ity Council.

NEW YORK (JTA)—A gift of
$1,000,000 from Julius Silver, New
York attorney, to the American
Technion Society will enable the
Technion—Israel Institute of Tech-
nology—to assume an international
leadership role in the field of bio-
medical engineering.
The gift will make possible the
creation of a Center of Medical
Engineering and Applied Human
Physiology at the Technion's Mt.
Carmel campus. The Technion is
already a pioneer in the applica-
tion of engineering technology to
medicine. The ATS also announced
that Technion laboratories in sani-
tary engineering were selected to
participate in a worldwide project
to explore new solutions for the
disposal of waste materials. The
project is sponsored by the United
Nations.
