He had arranged to meet with
staff members of Al Ahram,
Egypt's largest daily newspaper,
which is regarded as a semi-offi-

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
100th anniversary of the Yiddish
press in the United States was
celebrated here by more than 2,000
persons.
The celebration was arranged
by J. L. Peretz Verein, the Yiddish
writers union.
President Nixon, in a message
addressed to the gathering, lauded
the role which the Yiddish press
played in the development of Jew-
ish cultural, social and economic
life in the country and in bringing
Jewish immigrants closer to Amer-
ican life.
Greetings were also received
from Israel President Zalmar.
Shazar and Prime Minister Golda
Meir.

String to Membership

LOS ANGELES (JTA)—A gift to
the United Jewish Welfare Fund
and Israel Emergency Fund is now
a requisite for membership in Sinai
Temple, the largest Conservative
congregation in southern California.
Adoption of a resolution to that
effect by the synagogue board of
directors was announced by Dr.
Edward Kamenir, president, and
Rabbi Hillel Silverman.
