Rabbi Syme to Be Honored
on :r 5thYear as Clergyman

Temple Israel this weekend will
celebrate tvvo festive events in the
life of Rabbi M. Robert Syme,
who has served the congregation
since coming to Detroit in 1953.

At the high school graduation
service 8 p.m. today, Rabbi Syme
will be honored on the occasion of
his 25th year in the rabbinate and
his 50th birthday.

A resolution drafted by the board
of trustees of the congregation will
be presented by Temple Israel
President Jack Caminker, and
Rabbi Syme will be honored by the

valedictory speakers. Valerie To
Madison, Nancy Joan Shapiro and
David Louis Hiller, representing
the high school graduates and the
religious school.

A communitywide tribute is plan-
ned for Sunday, when a dinner-
dance honoring the double event
will be held in the temple social
hall.
Bernard E. Linden, chairman
of the testimonial committee
honoring Rabbi Syme, also an-
nounces that a trip to Cincinnati
is being planned for the week-
end of June 6, when Rabbi Symc
receives an honorary doctor of
divinity degree from his alma ,

mater, the Hebrew Union Col-
lege-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Born in Winnipeg, Rabbi Syme
received his bachelor's degree
from Wesley College in Winnipeg
and his masters degree in educa-
tion from the University of Pitts-
burgh.
.He was ordained by the late
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise from the
New York School of HUC-JIR.
Before coming to Detroit, Rabbi
Syme served a congregation in
Butler, Pa., for six years, and was
presented with the Man of the Year
Award from the Butler Chamber
of Commerce.
His service to Temple Israel, the
Jewish community of Detroit and
the general community are illus-
trated by his participation in many
activities, particularly- in the areas
of family counseling, interreligious
and interfaith programs.
He is a past president of the
Family Service Society of Metro-
politan Detroit and a board mem-
ber of the Jewish Historical So-
ciety, Midrasha, Bnai Brith Youth
Organization, Jewish Community
Council and Anti-Defamation Lea-
gue.
On the board of governors of
the Union Institute of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, he also is a member of
the religious education confer-
ence of the Central Conference
of American Rabbis and the con-
ference committee of the World
Union for Progressive Judaism.
Rabbi Syme is married to for-
mer Sonia Hendin of Winnipeg.
They have three sons, Daniel B., a
rabbinical student at the Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati; David,
a student at the University of Ari-
zona and a young pianist; and
Michael, who is completing the
10th grade in high school.

tive council at the recent conven-
tion at the Concord Hotel, New
York.

British Rabbis Oppose
Meet With S. Africa

BRITAIN — The Council of Re-
form and Liberal Rabbis here has
announced its opposition to the
forthcoming South African cricket
tour.
At the same time, a council
statement urged abstention from
any form of unlawful protest, par-
ticularly violence, and disruptive
action.
The principle of the equality
of man was pointed out as a
"fundamental affi rmation of
Judaism."
The statement went on to say,
"The policy of apartheid as prac-
ticed in South Africa plainly vio-
lates that principle."
They concluded, "Any attempt
physically to prevent or disrupt
the tour, if it is not canceled,
wculd in our view be wrong."

Richard Tucker to Return
for 9th Year as Cantor
at Chicago Services

CHICAGO—Richard Tucker, be-
ing honored on his 25th year with
the Metropolitan Opera, will return
as cantor for the High Holy Days
in the Park Synagogue Shaare
Shalom, with services to be held
in the grand ballroom of the
Sheraton-Chicago Hotel.
Beginning with Rosh Hashana
Sept. 30, through the Yom Kippur
services, Oct. 9 and 10, Cantor
Tucker will perform his ninth con- .
secutive High Holy Days services.
