Russian sews' Pleas Cite Fruitless Attempts to Leave of

LONDON (JTA) — Seven Jews
from Vilna, capital of Soviet Lith-
uania, have sent a letter to United

rael and the chairman of the UN
Human Rights Commission de-
manding their right to emigrate
and settle in Israel, "the land of
our ancestors."
The letter, made public here,
stated that the signatories had
applied repeatedly to Soviet au-
thorities for exit visas but were
refused without explaination. "This
has driven us to appeal to you, to
world public opinion, to help us

The' signatories gave their own
home addresses in the letter and
listed the names and street ad-
dresses of relatives in Israel they
said they wanted to join.
The letter said in part, "Few
Jews now remain in beautiful
Lithuania and this green country
has turned into the mute grave of
300,000 Jews massacred — 87 per
cent of the Jewish population be-
fore World War II.
"Even the Jewish language in-
scriptions have been erased from
the mass graves. No kadish (pray-
er for the dead) or yizkor (memo-
rial prayers) are permitted nor
are Jews allowed to gather on the
anniversary of the massacre. This
is in what Jews for five centuries
called Yerushalayim Delitta—the
Jerusalem of Lithuania."

II, was once regarded as the
most important center of Jewish

ed to live with an uncle in Israel,
claimed that he was given a per-
mit to go to Isrzel last Sept. 12.
But when he applied for an exit
visa, he was turned down on
grounds that officials of the minis-
try of culture did not like the list
of books he asked to be permitted
to take with him.
He wrote that on the strength of
his permit he had sold his apart-
ment and liquidated most of his
possessions "for a pittance." He
gave up his job and cannot get
another. He is destitute and living
on money borrowed from friends.
The writer said he has appealed
for help to Premier Alexi N. Kosy-
gin, the Presidium of the Supreme
Soviet, the Soviet and International
Red Cross, the minister of interior
and even the government news-
paper, Izvestia. He said he has
received no reply from any of those
sources.
He said the only reply he gets
