Humphrey Sees
2 Anti-Semitic Novels, Written Fatah Patient at
in Soviet Union Are Best Sellers Hadassah Hospital

Friday, May 22, 1970-31

LONDON — The Soviet Ministry
of Defense has just published an
anti-Semitic novel called "Love
and Hate." Whatever love it des-
cribes is drowned in hate—hatred
of Jews, intellectuals, Soviet "lib-
erals," and Western and Com-
munist foreigners.
The author, a retired naval offi-
cer named Ivan Shevtsov, is
already a center of controversy in
Moscow literary circles for an-
other recently published novel,
"In the Name of the Father and
of the Son."
"Komsomoiskaya Pravda," the
youth newspaper, printed a review
which called that book absurd,
banal, illiterate and ill-intentioned,
and said it showed "a morbid
liking for collection Philistine
filth."
Sovetskaya Rossiya, a "con-
servative" newspaper published
by the Central Committee, de-
fended "In the Name," saying
the book was concerned with
"protecting the younger genera-

tion from hostile ideological in-
fluence, from the corrupting art
of the bourgeois West." It also
printed letters praising the book
and asking for more, ostensibly
written by readers to the pub-
lisher, the Moscow Worker Pub-
lishing House.
The Komsomolskaya Pravda re-
view had criticized the publisher
for putting the book out. "Love
and Hate," was an editiion of
200,000 printed by the Armed
Forces Publishing House of the
ministry of defense.
It will therefore be sent to teh
library of every military unit in
the Soviet Union, according to
in formed sources.
Both books are already out of
print and unless there is a serious
critical reaction against them,
there will be new editions.
