Air of Secrecy on Arms Sales Denied in D.C.
In his syndicated column Jack
Anderson says he learned from
"most reliable sources" that the
United States was supplying bombs
to Israel. "Israel urgently needed
bombs and the U.S. agreed to
supply some," Anderson stated.
"The bomb deal received the
personal approval of President
Nixon, who has been criticized by
Jewish leaders in this country for
not doing enough for Israel,"
Anderson wrote. "But top State
Department officials apparently
have been kept in the dark about
the bomb shipments."
The columnist said President
Nixon first hinted that the U.S.
might be giving secret aid to
Israel when he told a closed con-
ference with the nations governors
last week that the U.S. was help-
ing Israel in ways he could not
talk about. The State Department
opposes more arms aid to Israel
which could lead to a Middle East
arms race with the Soviet Union,
Anderson said. State Department
officials even argue that Soviet
arms supplies to the Arab gov-
ernments could strengthen their
ability to make peace with Israel
without being overthrown by pa-
lestinian guerrillas. According to
Anderson, "President Nixon, mean-
while, has tended to look upon

Israel increasingly as the best
bulwark against Communist en-
croachment in the Middle East."
JTA reports from Washington
that State Department spokesman
Robert J. McCloskey, while main-
taining that he was "not at liber-
ty" to go into detail, said at his
briefing Tuesday that he was sur-
prised at charges of an "alleged
air of secrecy about this item (the
bomb sales)." He said the U.S.
has had an ongoing, project-by-
project program Of military aid to
Israel for several years. State De-
partment sources contacted by the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency said
there was "no doubt" about the
bomb sales.

THE DETROIT JEWISH HEWS
:McCloskey said it was not his
"understanding" that the United
States had any agreement to re-
place downed Israeli planes. Pend-
ing clarification, his statement ap-
peared to contradict the announce-
ment of Secretary of State Wil-
liam P. Rogers on March 23 that
"the United States will be in a
position to provide additional as
well as replacement aircraft
promptly if the situation requires
it."
McCloskey also said there would
be no announcement of additional
jet sales to Israel in conjunction
with the visit here of Foreign Min-
ister Abba Eban.
