The dinner was held in the Detroit Institute of Arts, which has received a bequest of 400 paintings and other works from Mr. Tannahill's estate. The fifth regional meeting of the Jewish War Veterans, held in South Bend May 1-3, was attended by Department Commander Howard Waterstone, Past National Commander Harry T. Madison, National Executive Committeeman Judge Lawrence Gubow and Past Depart- ment Commander Bernard Hoffman. Rabbi Manfred Pick, principal of Akiva Hebrew Day School, is participating in the 13th annual convention of the National Conference of Yeshiva Principals, through Sunday at the Pioneer Country Club, Greenfield Park, New York. Principals of close to 400 Hebrew day schools throughout the United States and Canada are attending the convention. Rabbi Simon Murciano, headmaster of Millet Day School, and Sid- ney Selig, director of education at Beth Shalom Schools, will attend the 44th annual convention of the National Council for Jewish Educa- tion beginning today at Grossinger's, New York. Rabbi Murciano and Selig are respectively an executive officer and president of the Jewish Educators Council of Metropolitan Detroit. Strike Closes Jewish Bakeries Eleven Jewishbakeries were on strike El this s week in a continuing I dispute between Local 78 of the Bakery and Confectionery Work- ers Union and the Jewish Master Bakers Association. Bakeries affected are Epstein, Jewel, Kountry Korner, Mayer, Mertz, Miami, New Modern, Star, Vienna, Weiss and Zeman. A spokesman for the union said all Jewish bakeries closed last Fri- day and Saturday morning, and there were no positive develop- ments in the strike as of Wednes- day. Leon Zagerman, chairman of the Master Bakers Association, said some 70 employes are affected. He said the association had offered the workers a $15 weekly raise, but the union wants $21.
