Israel Independence Day Message By ALFRED E. KLEIN President, Flint Jewish Community Council Twenty-two years ago, a momentous drama in the history of the Jewish people was enacted. Twenty-two years ago, a link was forged, rejoining the links of a broken chain of nationhood that extended back through 5.000 years of recorded history. Twenty-two years ago the modern state of Israel was born. I remember so vividly the anticipation and the elation we all felt, during those days leading up to May 14, 1948. We prayed that the Arab nations would accept the decision of the United Nations, as they had pledged to do when they signed the UN Charter. We prayed for peace and friendship, and Israel's people girded themselves for defense. It was well they did so. Immediately following the declaration of nation-hood by David Ben- Gurion in that historic session in Tel Aviv, the dam broke. Arab armies attacked the new-born state of Israel from every direction. Severely underarmed, the men, women and children of Israel fought with every weapon available to protect their homes and preserve their nation. Jews from every country in the world rallied to their aid, sending food, clothing, other necessities and money. Because of this great united effort, the Jewish nation in Israel survived. The War of Independence really hasn't ended. Every day, young Israeli men and women stand at lonely outposts along the Suez Canal, the Golan Heights and along the Jordan River. They are guarding Israel's independence. Every time a man, woman or child is killed or injured by a terrorist bullet or bomb, he is making a payment in blood THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 30—Friday, May 15, 1970 SOME JUNE DATES! for Israel's independence. And we who are safe from those bullets and bombs also must pay our share so that independ- ence has meaning. We were partners with the pioneers during the long years of the British man- Photographers date. We were in the DP camps, on board the 352 - 8930 refugee ships, and stood on the docks of Haifa as; the new immigrants poured into the promised land of Israel. We were with Israel's brave citizens as Classified Ads Get Quick Results they cleared rocks and drained swamps under the ominous Syrian guns. We were, and still are, with Professional Entertainment the homeless, the uprooted and displaced for whom our efforts have made the dream of Israel a reality.. Independence is not a point on the road which one passes and forgets. Independence is a condition of freedom which must be preserved and main- tained. The proclamation points out that "Israel has expressed time and again her desire to achieve a just and lasting peace with her Arab neighbors so that together they can develop the region for the benefit of all the peoples of the Middle East." Mayor Cronin paid tribute to Israel's adherence to democratic principles and its efforts to bring "the political, economic and so- cial benefits of 20th Century liv- ing to this small corner of the Middle East." He stated that "the young state has served as a ready refuge and provided a new lease on life for Jews who have suffered persecu- tion and oppression in lands less fortunate than ours" and called attention to its "efforts to reach a state of economic viability, at the same time sharing its technical knowledge and extending its as- sistance to other nations."
