MONTREAL (JTA) — Philip B.
Veinberg, outgoing dean of the
Montreal bar, predicted that "the
future of the Jews in Quebec will
be the same as the future of Que-
bec in Canada."
Addressing community workers
of Allied Jewish Community Serv-
ices, representing 125,000 Montreal
Jews, Veinberg added that 2,000
Jews move to Montreal annually,
placing it third in Jewish immigrar
tion behind New York state and
Israel.
Veinberg joined with Boris Le-
vine and Manuel Badshaw, presi-
dent and executive director of
AJCS, in urging Jewish integration
into the French-Canadian commu-
nity.
While French-Canadians were
"insulated and isolated from ex-
ternal influence" up to a decade
ago, the outgoing dean said, "a
new French-Canadian generation
is making big strides forward to
gain a foothold in their prov-
ince's prosperity."
