Justice Landau, who participated (The Jewish Levin News regrets the typographical error in the date in last week's announce- ment.) Justice Landau, who participated in many of the milestone decisions of Israel's high court, will speak about "Law and Justice in Israel." This meeting is sponsored by Colman Bronson By SAM STEINGLASS To most Americans he is the superstar, and a living legend. Away from the bigger-than-life screen, however, is a man we all seem to know. Like a dear friend. Like a brother. Like a fellow Jew. Like a fellow human being. Like many of us, he came to America from "the old country" —from Europe—and he sank his roots deep into the heart and soul and soil of America. He breathed its air of freedom —deeply, so that it filled his lungs and his brain. He beheld its end- less horizons of hope and oppor- tunity beckoning him onward— challenging him—blinding him with its sunshine—urging him to earn the prize, the reward, the Ameri- can dream. In his chosen profession, he 1 — has wrestled with words—even as Jacob wrestled with the angel. He has wrestled with words—to give them life—to give them truth—to give them the maxi- mum meaning. He has never short-changed an author. He has given back more, but never less, than he has received. He will never admit, however, that he has fully repaid his debt to America. This is his personal installment plan—to repay Ameri- ca for all it offered him in the way of opportunity and freedom— and no matter how much he tries, he can't seem to catch up on his payments. He seeks no free ride on the gravy train of fame. He prefers to walk with the rest of us on the hard road of reality. Wise, understanding and aware, he does not engage in the stylish sophistry who is a Jew and what is a Jew. Instead, he goes directly to the heart of the matter, which is the importance of being a Jew, the im- portance of remembering one's her- itage, the importance of living up to the responsibilities of a Jew. He feels it a special respon- sibility to live in this time, in this generation which destiny has chosen to witness the re- birth of Israel. Twenty-seven years ago, he stood in Madison Square Garden as the narrator for a mass memorial to the Jews who lost their lives during the Nazi reaime—and he declared, "We will never die!"
