Additions to Arms Arsenal to Be Part of Israel Parade

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Defense
officials took the wraps off three
potent new weapons that have
recently been added to Israel's ar-
senal and will be displayed for
the first time during Independe nce
Day celebrations next week.
They are an improved Israeli
version of the famous American
Patton tank; speedy new missile
boats of the "Saar" class built for
Israel in France before the arms
embargo; and a new self-propelled
90 mm. cannon mounted on half
tracks.
The 135-foot missile - carrying
boats are not unfamiliar to the
world. Five of them, unarmed,
were spirited away from Cher-
bourg last Christmas day by Is-
raeli crews and dashed across the
Mediterranean to Haifa, causing an
international sensation and acute
embarrassment to the French gov
ernment which had embargoed the
boats. But seven of their sister
boats had been delivered by
France previously.
According to Israeli officials.
they are among the fastest and
most sophisticated naval craft in
the Mediterranean and are suit-
able for a variety of missions, in-
clulding the destruction of enemy
vessels, coastal defense and sup-
port operations.
The

ment and carry eight electroni-

Gabriel" missiles which are man-
uufactured in Israel. The boats
are said to have excellent sea-
keeping qualities, high speed and
durability and are capable of sink-
ing much larger craft at small
risk.
Officially Israel has seven of
the "Saar" class boats. The five
that arrived from Cherbourg
last year were reportedly sold
to commercial interests for oil
exploration purposes and have
dropped out of the news.

cannon like the powerful British
Centurion cannon. With increased
fire power and a speed close to
50 MPH. the revamped Patton has

joined the Centurion as one of
Israel's main armored units, de-
fense sources said.
The new 90mm. anti-tank gun
is manned by a crew of five. Its
mission is to support the infantry
and armored infantry.
According to defense officials,
Israel is now almost entirely self-
sufficient with respect to all types
of ammunition, from machinegun
cartridges to air force and artil-

NEW YORK (JTA) — A spokes-
man for one of the city's 26 local
antipoverty agencies charged Wed-
nesday that black militants shout-
ed anti-Semitic abuse during a
special panel meeting last week of
the city's Council Against Poverty
and roughed up two Jews with
no protests from officials of the
council.
The panel meeting concerned
complaints about distribution of
antipoverty funds in section or
Brooklyn to poor Jews. Blacks and
Puerto Ricans.
Dr Marvin Schick, assistant to
Mayor Lindsay for intergroup re-
lations said the city administra-
tion was seriously concerned about
the problems of antipoverty-fund
handling . in the Brooklyn section
and was exploring means of re-
ducing tensions in that area aris-
ing from differences between Jews
and the other minority groups in
the allocation of poverty funds by
that area's community corpora-
tion, the designation for the locally
elected antipoverty agencies.
Panel meetings are arranged
by the council, the city's central
antipoverty agency on which the
26 community corporations are ,
represented, to hear complaints
about handling of poverty funds
by the local corporations.
The panel meeting last Thurs-
day night held at the council's
Manhattan offices was arranged in
response to protests that poverty
funds were going disproportion-
ately to poor Jews in the Brooklyn
area, to the purported detriment
of poor Blacks and Puerto Ricans.
The area is one of two in the city
in which Jews are represented on
the local poverty agencies.

lery shells. The officials said that
some ammunition is purchased
abroad because it is more `rasible
to do so, not because it cannot be
produced in Israel.
