Fun Galore in Brooklynite Arnold Sherman's Story
About an American Family That Settles in Israel
Arnold Sherman is the public re-
lations man for El AI in Israel.
He lives with his family in a fish-
ing village north of Tel Aviv. He
has written poetry, fiction, special
articles for Israeli and American
newspapers since settling in Israel
in 1963.
A native of Brooklyn, he has
brought with him to Israel a
Brooklynese sense of humor and a
knack for the sensational in fic-
tion, as evidenced in his all-for-
fun story, "Impaled on a Cactus
Bush—An American Family in
Israel."
Published by Sabra Books, this
hilarious tale is about himself, his
wife, his mother, their three chil-
dren—all set to make the change in
Israel, the difficulties encountered
by the author who is fed-up on the
commuting on the Long Island
railroad and seelcs the transforma-
tion—and the experiences of a fam-
ily now almost rooted in the
ancient homeland.
It is not only because every-
the means of plunging into the
cactus territory from the dis-
tress of New York—all make for
fun galore.

actions to the big as well as to the "polizia!"
And when Sherman seeks a
trivial. .
A typical example is his reac-
tion to the Israel police in a chap-
ter titled "The Polizia." He starts
by denying that he hates cops.
Then he explains a cop in Israel:
"The problem in Israel is that most
of the police officers are Jewish,
and a yiddishe gunslinger is a
paradox which is socially silly and
logically untenable. A Jew can
make a pretty aggressive soldier,
particularly if he is fed enough

figure as a farmer or a fisherman.

Becker's Exciting
Civil War Novel
An historical novel can be most
exciting, and the newest work of
Stephen Becker, "When the War Is
Over," published by Random
House, is one of the most intrigu-
ing.
Dealing with Civil War episodes
and personalities, being partly fic-
tion and partly historical, the
Becker novel serves the great pur-
pose of arousing renewed interest
in one of.the most dramatic periods
in American history.
It is the true story of Thomas
Martin, believed to have been in
his teens, who was executed by a
Union firing squad, May 11, 1865,
on a charge of having been a Con-
federate guerrilla. On May 29,
only 18 days late, an amnesty was
declared for all rebel soldiers by
President Andrew Johnson.
In the course of his novel, Becker
deals with many of the actual par-
ticipants in the war, many of his
novel's characters being actual
Civil War figures.
What his novel "When the War Is
Over" does is reconstruct an im-
portant chapter of Civil War his-
tory. It is a valuable addition to
Civil War literature and is written
in such fascinating style that it
earns widest interest from lovers
of good fiction and adherents to
trends favoring the gathering of
historical data. P.S.
El Fatah Sends a Gift
to Family of Israeli
Held Captive in Jordan
TEL AVIV (JTA) — El Fatah,
the Arab guerrilla organization,
attempted to send a Passover gift
parcel to the family of Scmuel
Rosenwasser of Metullah, an Is-
raeli kidnaped by guerrillas last
New Year's Eve, and held captive
in Jordan.
An Israeli officer at a border
post refused to accept the parcel
from a United Nations officer who
delivered it on behalf of El Fatah.
Israelis dismiss the gesture as
a publicity stunt intended to im-
prove El Fatah's image. The par-
cel contained some clothes for Ro-
senwasser's wife and daughter ac-
cording to the newspaper Yediot
Ahronot which reported the inci-
dent.
According to reliable sources Ro-
senwasser, 50, has been well treat-
ed by his captors who are trying
to persuade him to return to Hun-
gary, the country from which he
originally emigrated to Israel.
According to reports published
here last month, El Fatah said it
would "deport" Rosenwasser to
Hungary, a move symbolic of what
it would do to all immigrant Jews
if it ever defeated Israel.

Each of the characters in the
Sherman story plays a role in the
process of transforming from: an
American into an Israeli, in the
course of going through plenty of
misery and gaining a way into the
happy life of home-coming. Visi-
tors from everywhere find their
spots here in the search for tran-
quility in a new home. Excitement
never ends. Whether it is trouble
with the plumber in the Holon
laundry scandal or pacifying a
member of the family or adjusting
to the new language, with the dif-
ficulties posed by Hebrew until it
is mastered—there are incidents
galore and a laugh on every page.
While Sherman really doesn't
make it possible for the reader to
master an idea of "how to build a
house for nothing" — just as he
doesn't solve the "polizia" or many
other problems — he nevertheless
paves an easy road to settlement
in Israel by way of humor. His
story will delight readers of all
varieties — even the skeptics will
get a better. taste of Israel in the
spirit of fun and good fellowship.
