Stokely Carmichael Backs 'Just Struggle' of Arabs Against Israel Rabbinical Assembly Elects S. G. Levi NEW YORK — At its annual business meeting, the 70th annual convention of the Rabbinical As- WASHINGTON (JTA) — Stoke- sembly, international association ly Carmichael, the black militant of the Conservative rabbinate, leader, declared that the Palesti- elected Rabbi S. Gershon Levi of nian Arabs were engaged in a "just struggle" against an Israeli "settler colony" that by definition "must commit genocide" but will be "destroyed." Carmichael, who recently re- turned from 14 months consult- ing with African leaders, was making his first public sppech on his return at George Wash- ington University, where he was met with many boos from the largely white, largely Jewish student audience. "It's beginning to look like a bar mitzva," he commented. Carmichael, warning his listen- ers not to confuse anti-Israelism with anti-Semitism, described a "settler colony" as one "where "Europeans leave their land, go to an area and completely take it over." He identifed other such "settler colonies" as the United States, Canada and South Africa. But, he said, the Palestinian Arabs had "history, justice and truth" on their side, "and you can never beat that combination." He added: "Who is Balfour to give the land of Palestine to a bunch of Zionists?" As to Jewish claims to the land. he said, "The Jews wrote the Bible, that's why it belongs to (them)." "Why not," he asked, "take the land (for a Jewish state) from Germany?" Carmichael described El Fatah as "a logical and scien- tific reaction to the Israeli bomb- ing." In an interview on the David Frost television program, Car- michael said Monday night that "judging his genius objectively," Adolph Hitler was "the greatest white man." However, he assert- ed that from a moral viewpoint, what Hitler did "was wrong, was evil." Rabbis Judah Nadich and Saul Teplitz asked that their colleagues increase pressure upon Jewish federations and welfare funds to meet a larger share of the cost of intensive Jewish education, es- pecially the Jewish all-day school, to which, they said, "we must look for our future leaders. HEADQUARTERS FOR A call upon Jews to "live liter- ally in two civilizations" was is- sued by Dr. Moshe Davis, Americ- an-born professor at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. "Whatever thep rice of cultural dualism," said Dr. Davis, "it is clear that modern Jewry has freely opted for it. And from this stance," he empha- sized, "there will be no retreat into any ghetto. The struggle for Jewish survival will be fought in the wide open society." While recognizing that today "the spirit- ual and cultural self-sufficiency of American Jewry is seriously in question," Dr. Davis asserted that the "infusion of the Eretz Yisrael dimension into every facet of Am- erican Jewry's evistince" can pro- vide the needed "vitalization of our institutions". Jewish education received most attention. It was cited as a possible preventive for intermar- riage by Rabbi Simon, who however, predicted that marri- ages across religious lines would continue to increase. He called upon his colleagues to find ways of welcoming the newcomers to Judaism-10,000 in 1969 alone — and to draw new strength from the converts to Judaism.
