NEW YORK—James Rosenberg
is a fourth-year student at the
New York School of Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Reli-
gion. As part of his practical train-
ing he serves as student-rabbi to
Temple Beth - Or, an unusual
assignment because Temple Beth-
Or is a congregation for the deaf.
Dedication and unusual skills are
required of the students of the col-
lege who minister to congregations
for the deaf in New York and
California. Services, teaching and
counseling—any kind of personal
communications with congregants
requires mastery in the sign lan-
guage; even the choir "sings" by
means of expressive signs.
Student-rabbi Rosenberg has a

"talking typewriter," like a two-
way teletype machine in his apart-
ment. For long hours he speak-
writes to members of his congre-
gation who seek counseling.

a ceremony in the Workmen's
Circle Center 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Sponsored annually by the

branch, whose members are sur-
vivors, the program will include
the traditional candle lighting, ad-
dresses and a memorial service.
The public is invited.
