Bitter Herbs in Vietnam

Al Smith, 'Happy Warrior,' and His Tragedy

Alfred E. Smith, of "Let's look
at the record" political fame, the
man of humor, who fought the Ku
'Klux Klan with courage who be-
came as "The Happy Warrior,"
later, when he lost out in his can-
didacy for the presidency, became
"the unhappy warrior" and a
"tragic warrior."
The story of this popular figure
is told in great detail and with a
deep understanding by Richard
O'Connor, whose biography of the
three-term governor of New To , k
was published by G. P. Putnam's
Sons.
This biography emerges as a
chapter in American history. It
is a splendid account of activity
on New York's East Side whose
changing character is described
in the course of the review of
the life of one of America's most
interesting personalities.
