First Plane Designed and Built
in Israel Makes Initial Flight

LYDDA-LArava, the first plane
designed and produced in Israel,
made its inaugural flight in a re-
cent military ceremony.
The twin-engine aircraft design-
ed for short takeoff and landing,
made its official performance be-
fore PremieY Golda Meir and mili-
tary leaders.
The $400,000 aircraft, powered
by Pratt and Whitney Canadian
turboprop engines, is intended for
feeder lines in developed nations
and for more rugged operations in
developing ,areas.
Arava lands and takes off in
600 feet, the length of two foot-
ball fields, on any flat ground.
It can carry two tons of cargo
and 20 passengers, and it is
easily serviced.
Israel Aircraft Industries, a

•

priority industry, is building
Arava. The company employes
12,000 persons, most hired since
the Six-Day War.
The first production model of
Arava is planned for 1971, the
company said, with an output rate
of four aircraft a month there-
after.
Israel also has purchased all
rights to the Commodore jet, an
American executive aircraft.
The French Jewish monthly
L'Arche recently reported that Is-
rael was constructing an improved
version of the French Mirage,
which is Israel's top combat air-
craft. The Israelis have armed the
plane with cannons instead of the
fashionable but impractical air-to-
air missiles. Other air forces have
followed suit. The Mirage should
be ready to fly early next year.

CHICAGO (JTA) — The church
press and publicists have an im- 1
portant role as conciliators in this
turbulent world, Lt. Gov. Paul
Simon of Illinois told several hun-
dred delegates attending the recent
Religious Communications Con-
gress and declared he had seen
too many anti-Israel comments in
the church press.
Recalling that the church press
had in many cases been silent
on Hitler in the 1930s, Simon
expressed the hope that similar
mistakes would not be made
today in the face of the needs
of a people who have suffered
from church indifference.
"We can be both pro-Israel and
pro-Arab," he said. "We must
recognize the needs of all suffer-
ing people."
