For two decades Israel Bond funds have influenced every factor of Israel's economic activity, and helped to create new industries. Here, a technician checks out a nuclear spectroscope at Elron Elec- tronics in Haifa, which also produces computers, generators and electronic tubes. This year Israel need a minimum of $250,000,000 in Israel Bond investments in order to expand existing industries, establish new ones and strengthen the economy for the absorption of 60,000 new immigrants. 64 Victor Ave., Highland Park Barney Dreyfuss: Neglected Baseball Pioneer s . ; Sincerest Passover Greetings HOA KOW INN Chinese and American Restaurant Specializing in Cantonese Foods 13715 West 9 Mile, West of Coolidge, Oak Park LI 7-4663 burgh Pirates in 1909 and the park lasted until 1969. At 60, it was the oldest ball park in the majors. The Pirates will move to the new Three Rivers Staduim for this season's games. Although Dreyfuss and Forbes Field are gone, let us hope they are not forgotten. Both played a big part in baseball history. A native of Freiberg, Germany, Dreyfuss arrived in the United States in 1881 and found employ- ment in a whiskey distillery in Paducah, Kentucky. Advised that outdoor activity would cure his poor health, he organized and played on a semi-professional baseball team. After the distillery moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1888, Dreyfuss became a part- owner of the Louisville Colonels, a major league team. He served the Colonels as secretary and treas- urer, And became the club's presi- dent in 1899. When the National League elim- inated the Louisville franchise in 1900, Dreyfuss shifted to the Pitts- burgh Pirates. He acquired com- plete control of the team in 1901, and the Pirates won three consecu- tive National League pennants. At the end of the 1903 season, Drey- fuss proposed that his National League champions meet the Amer- ican League champion Boston Red Sox in a series of games. The two leagues had been at odds prior to 1903, and Dreyfuss believed a post- season contest would establish better relations between them, and would create adidtional interest in baseball. Although Boston triumph. ed in the initial World Series, five games to three, the Pittsburgh players received more money than their opponents when Dreyfuss generally turned over all his pro- ceeds to his men. tenders for the pennant. Unlike the majority of club owners, baseball was Dreyfuss' only business, and except for the field manager's job, he handled every phase of the Pirates' operation. In 1909 he built Forbes Field, the first modern baseball stadium. He personally scouted the minor leagues for new talent, and many of his players became stars. Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, Rube Waddell, Paul and Lloyd Waner, Max Carey, Hazen (Kiki) Cuyler and Harold (Pie) Traynor played for Dreyfuss, and all are members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Dreyfuss almost had two other Hall of Famers but lost George Sisler on a technicality and passed up Tris Speaker when he found out the outfielder smoked cigarettes. During his reign the Pirates won two World Series (1909, 1925), six National League pennants, and fin- ished in the first division 26 times. Why isn't Barney Dreyfuss in baseball's Hall of Fame and why didn't Pittsburgh name its new stadium for one of the pioneers of the modern game? Those are good questions.
