Julia Wartell,
Home for Aged
Founder, 86
Julia Wartell, a founder of the
Jewish Home for the Aged on
Brush St., and instrumental in its
eventual move to 11501 Petoskey,
died Tuesday at
age 86.

er and onetime
member of Tem-
ple Beth El for
60 years, was
honored by the
Home for Aged
with an honoraii
At a time when
life membershi• Mrs. Wartell
patients in the home were known
as inmates, Mrs. Wartell actively
worked for removal of the stigma
in such a name. Her efforts were
a factor in the change from "in-
mate" to "resident."
A past president of the Eva
Prenzlauer Maternity Aid Society,
w'ilch provided needy mothers
with layettes, Mrs. Wartell was a
member of Hadassah and the sis-
terhoods of Temple Beth El and
Israel, where she was a current
member. She worked for many
years with causes,to aid the under-
piviledeg.
Mrs. Wartell, 17160 Ohio, leaves
two sons, Irving and Mitchell;
three daughters, Pearl, Mrs. Mil-
ton (Estelle) Miller and Mrs.
Harry (Gertrude) Mandell of Hal-
landale, Fla.; three grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.

Kosher Butcher, 76
Yeshiva U. Founder
OAKLAND, Calif. (JTA) — Dr.
Shelle R. Saphire, a founder of
Yeshiva College, now Yeshiva Uni-
versity, died here April 3 at age
79. Dr. Saphire, a biologist, served
as the first dean of Yeshiva Col-
lege, the first such institution es-
tablished under Jewish auspices
in the United States.
He also was a professor and head
of the biology department until
1960 when he was named profes-
sor emeritus.

Beatrice Katzin
Beatrice Katzin, a Detroiter for
45 years before moving to Cali-
fornia, died Monday in Marina
Del Ray, Calif. She was 64.
Mrs. Katzin was the wife of Dr.
Leon Katzin, a dentist who was
past president of Alpha Omega's
Detroit chapter some years ago.
(The Alpha Omega Dental School
in Jerusalem was suggested by
the family to those who wish to
make - a contribution in Mrs. Kat-
zin's name.)
The family belonged to Cong.
Bnai David, and Mrs. Katzin was
active in local organizations. She
was a native of New York, but
same to Detroit at an early age.
Survivors besides her husband
are a son, Lee of Beverly Hills;
a daughter, Mrs. Aarone Prenel;
and one grandchild.
