British Seek Legal
Kashrut Definition
THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
LONDON—"I should be pleased
if you would let me have a defini.
tion of the word kosher," began a
letter from D. K. Ellis, a British
marketing inspector, to officials on
the London Board of Shehita.
Jack Brenner, secretary of the
board, which is composed of 31
members who supervise kosher
butchers, said, "We ask 10 people
and get 10 different opinions. . . .
We're moving toward a definition
but, believe me, it's not easy."
Tfie decision on "What is and
isn't kosher?" has been turned
over to Britain's chief rabbi, Im-
manuel Jakobovits. He will con-
sult with the five judges of his
court, the Beth Din, to decide on
a definition which will then be
drawn up in legal terms.
The question has' grown out of
months of effort to prosecute two
butchers for fraud. The board
claims that two northwest London
butchers were advertising kosher
meat but selling non-kosher.
British law has never drawn up
a strict definition of kosher for
butchers. Unlike New York, Britain
has never had a law to specifically
prosecute butchers falsely adver-
tising as kosher, products for the
country's 400,000 Jews.
"We decided to ask for prosecu-
tion when the Trade Description
Act of 1968 was passed. This pre-
vented false advertising and false
trade descriptions," said Brenner.

Bias Charged in NYC Over Poverty Elections
David Farber, executive director
of the newly formed grass-roots
Jewish group, revealed that the
Human Resources Administration
allocated a modest budget for ad-
vertising the forthcoming poverty
elections, in the various ethnic
radio and newspaper, but made no
provisions for advertising in the
Jewish media.
"Clearly," F a r b e r declared,
"HRA is favoring certain ethnic
groups over others in a poverty
election of significant consequence.
Favoritism is bad for the favored
as well as the discriminated and it
is a shame that HRA has not yet
learned the bitter lesson of not too
long ago."
