Warning Out Against False Medicare Ads

The next time you read the name
"Medicare" in an ad in the Yellow
Pages don't think the Social Secur-
ity Administration put it there.
Also, the next time you do busi-
ness with a firm that operates
under a name like "Medicare
Equipment Rental and Sales Com-
pany" don't think you are dealing
with a government agency.
While "Medicare" is the un-
official name of the Federal health
insurance program for senior citi-
zens—a part of the social security
program — the government does
not advertise in the Yellow Pages
or operate an agency that answers
"Medicare" every time the tele-
phone rings.
In the past 31/2 years some busi-
nesses across the country have
found profit in using the name

"Medicare." Consequently, many
firms changed their names or
added the word "Medicare" to
them in order to capitalize on the
popularity of the new program
that has brought medical care
within the reach of all older peo-
ple.
Although no Federal law speci-
fically prohibits use of the word
"Medicare" as part of a firm's
business name, the Social Secur-
ity Administration has an obliga-
tion to investigate and prosecute
fraud or misrepresentation.
