received a scholarship to further
his studies from Baron Karoly
Hatvany and the Friends of the
Hungarian King's Opera House.
At this point, young Nicholas'
fortunes took a turn for the worse.
At the end of 1939 he was interred
in a Nazi labor camp. Upon his
escape from the German camp, lie
was taken prisoner by the Rus-
sians. At his release, he learned
his parents and most of his family
had been killed in Germany.
From 1946 to 1948, Cantor Fen-
akel served as chief cantor in
a. Budapest synagogue, then,
upon invitation of Baron Edmond
Rothschild, became cantor in the
Duke's Place Great Synagogue
in London, serving with Chief
Rabbis Immanuel Jakobovits and
Israel Brody.
In 1949, he was invited to become
cantor of Adas Shalom. Since then,
he has organized a synagogue
youth choir, as well as Sabbath
and holiday choirs, an annual mu-
sic festival and cantors club for
the training of young cantors.
Past president of the Cantors and
Ministers Association of Detroit,
Cantor Fenakel has been cited for
his volunteer work with golden age
groups. For 10 years, he has con-
ducted the Golden Age Choir of the
Jewish Center, and he has ar-
ranged programs at nursing homes
and various institutions, including
Jackson Prison and mental hospi-
tals. He also has serviced the
Home for the Aged during the past
20 years.
